my climbing tree...: March 2012
http://myclimbingtree.blogspot.com/2012_03_01_archive.html
Ideas for a wild childhood. Saturday, March 31, 2012. Please read this inspiring report. Realeased today by the National Trust, written by Stephen Moss. It's evidence based writing on the fact that our children are losing access to nature. Wild places are not just for the middle classes who can afford large private gardens, it should be for everyone and within easy access of where you and I live. Can this type of environment be described as part of a sustainable future? Links to this post. Over the past ...

Wooly aphid | The artful abuela
https://donaprofe.wordpress.com/2015/07/09/wooly-aphid
Short writings about my experiences as a grandmother and my encounters with the natural world. Piedrecitas en el rio. Spiny backed orb weaver →. July 9, 2015. It looked like lint on the leaf of my winged sumac. Then it moved! Scary music here). I took pictures and then came inside to investigate. It’s called a wooly aphid and the white cottony film covering it’s body has a waxy coat that protects it from some predators. Meanwhile, the aphid sucks happily on plant juices! the Nature of Portland: Elk Rock Island: Nature on the Willamette
http://thenatureofportland.blogspot.com/2011/02/elk-rock-island.html
The Nature of Portland Store. Friday, February 18, 2011. Elk Rock Island: Nature on the Willamette. To get to Elk Rock Island (unless you have a boat), you first have to go to Milwaukie's recently improved Spring Park. Take the trail toward the Willamette River. The short, dirt trail leads through the woods to a low, rocky area which - during the winter high water months - is actually underwater. Hence, the name, Elk Rock Island. Tree silhouetted against the Willamette. 8226; Willamette River Floodplain.

the Nature of Portland: August 2013
http://thenatureofportland.blogspot.com/2013_08_01_archive.html
The Nature of Portland Store. Wednesday, August 21, 2013. Cascara Berries are for the Birds; Mine are for Cedar Waxwings. Hen I planted four Cascara Buckthorn. Trees in my yard several years ago, my yard didn't have much to offer the wildlife. So I couldn't wait for my new trees to mature enough to produce lots of berries, which would hopefully bring in lots of native birds during the summer months. Berries of the Cascara Buckthorn. Ecently though, I have seen Northern Flickers eating the berries. An...
Urban Wildlife Guide: Summer Azure
http://www.urbanwildlifeguide.net/2015/07/summer-azure.html
Sunday, July 12, 2015. The summer azure butterfly, Celestrina neglecta. Click to enlarge. Note the handsome black and white striped antennae. Summer azures are in the butterfly family Lycaenidae, famously studied by Vladimir Nabokov and commonly called "blues." Although I stood for an hour with my shutter poised, these little ones were too busy to linger with their wings open so I did not get a single shot of the blue surface. Here is a poem I like that has a blue butterfly in it. That made us laugh.
Urban Wildlife Guide: May 2015
http://www.urbanwildlifeguide.net/2015_05_01_archive.html
Sunday, May 31, 2015. I took this picture of my local American robin on the first day of spring this year. Click to enlarge. We had come through a very cold winter. Like some robins in these parts, this one stayed north. I fed him raisins. There were days when it was so cold that he'd take a raisin and hop away into a place sheltered from the wind to eat it. He kept his feathers puffed up for insulation and often hunkered down so his legs were covered by his belly feathers. And he is not alone! Yesterday...
Urban Wildlife Guide: January 2015
http://www.urbanwildlifeguide.net/2015_01_01_archive.html
Sunday, January 25, 2015. I wrote about bird droppings a few years ago. You can read that blog by clicking here. Since then, and entirely by accident, I photographed two more birds to add to that group of photos. Above is an immature peregrine falcon, Falco perigrinus. And below - -. An American Robin, Turdus migratorius. Sunday, January 18, 2015. John Steinbeck wrote: " What good is the warmth of summer, without the cold of winter to give it sweetness. Sunday, January 11, 2015. Picking up a snack. I hav...
