Reflections. By Rebecca. Sharing my life and love with others. Sunday, March 16, 2014. Race for Inequality Graphs. This is an activity to help my kids to practice recognizing the graph of an inequality solution. I love "kill and drill" practice disguised as an activity; I love it even more if I can get them up and moving around the classroom. This short activity does both. Tape the graphs around the classroom with masking tape. Pass out two solution cards to each student. Short and sweet :). Be irrelevan...

The Math Hatter: We're Going on a Square Hunt: Simplifying Radicals
http://cjsieling.blogspot.com/2015/02/were-going-on-square-hunt-simplifying.html
Friday, February 6, 2015. We're Going on a Square Hunt: Simplifying Radicals. The class spent a week exploring the Pythagorean Theorem. After creating a need with the students to handle square roots, on Friay we went over how to simplify them. This topic has always been a bit dry and never quite landed with the students. I have always talked about trying to find perfect squares and use those to break down the number. So as the class entered today I played this video. We're going on a square hunt. My mini...

Reflections. By Rebecca.: Arthur Benjamin & Inspiring Math
http://reflections-rebecca.blogspot.com/2015/06/arthur-benjamin-inspiring-math.html
Reflections. By Rebecca. Sharing my life and love with others. Friday, June 19, 2015. Arthur Benjamin and Inspiring Math. There are many things that I find difficult about teaching, but two of them are planning for a substitute teacher and inspiring my students. 1) Planning lessons for a substitute is really hard for me! I stress about whether my directions are clear enough, if the students will have enough time or if there will be extra time, if the substitute will even read my plans, etc. 8220;The numb...

Teaching with Borrowed Wisdom: Monday Made It: Operations and Properties

Monday, August 4, 2014. Monday Made It: Operations and Properties. I'm a little late to the party, but I thought I'd link up with 4th Grade Frolics. I made this PowerPoint of arithmetic operations and properties. (Am I the only one whose middle schoolers always ask "which way does the division go? If you want the files, you can get them here. Teaching with Borrowed Wisdom: Made it Monday: Divisibility PowerPoint
http://teachingwithborrowedwisdom.blogspot.com/2014/08/made-it-monday-divisibility-powerpoint.html
Monday, August 11, 2014. Made it Monday: Divisibility PowerPoint. I taught the divisibility rules last year, but I don't think the kids really got them. I have had them memorized since fifth grade, but I never understood how they worked. So I did a little internet research. The videos at artofproblemsolving.com finally cleared up the confusion. SBG Year 2: Initial Thoughts | Praxis of Reflection
https://praxisofreflection.wordpress.com/2011/07/12/sbg-year-2-initial-thoughts
A Mathematics Educator's Blog. SBG Year 2: Initial Thoughts. Okay, time for some brainstorming! I mentioned in my last post. That I have a LOT of areas for improvement in my implementation of SBG. I got all inspired reading the comments to Shawn’s post. Where people shared how they make reassessing work, and here are my initial thoughts, very much subject to change. Warm-ups are only given comments, no scores. Quizzes are given comments and scores. Occasionally, Learning Targets may be assessed via a pro...

Reflections. By Rebecca.: Becoming Anglican
http://reflections-rebecca.blogspot.com/2014/11/becoming-anglican.html
Reflections. By Rebecca. Sharing my life and love with others. Sunday, November 23, 2014. So here we are! Today, Adam and I were confirmed. In short, confirmation is a laying on of hands, an ordination for the lay person. The bishop prayed for each of us and then for our marriage, commissioning us to do the work of the Lord in our every day lives. It was awesome! We are blessed to be a part of this church and blessed to be a part of the service of the Lord. Peace be with you. Middle School Math Rules!

Sch00l Stuff: Quick and Easy Way to Learn Students' Names
http://sch00lstuff.blogspot.com/2015/08/quick-and-easy-way-to-learn-students.html
Monday, August 3, 2015. Quick and Easy Way to Learn Students' Names. This odd exchange always seemed to disrupt the flow of the class and did nothing to foster the culture and climate I had hoped to establish. Finally, problem solved! Here is how to make them:. 1 Have students get a sheet of paper from their notebook. 2 Make a fold about 1/3 of the way down from the top of the sheet. It ends up looking like a rectangle from the front. And a triangle when you look at it from the side. Subscribe to: Post C...

reflections of a math teacher: April 2010
http://mrsilovepi.blogspot.com/2010_04_01_archive.html
Reflections of a math teacher. Sunday, April 11, 2010. I have been reading a lot in the blog world and there has been a lot of discussion about grading. The big debate seems to be since we have. To give students a grade, what should that grade represent? Just like in any debate, there are two major parties - SBG and I'm not sure what to name the second (traditional? I think that almost has a negative connotation). There a couple of internal conflicts I am having with the school I am teaching at now.
