After the rain the predictable, though exciting prospect of migrants will get people checking the tide times for Holy Island and generally moving to the coast. Greenish warblers are exciting birds to find, but they are unlikely to appear in NZ26. It’s not a particularly efficient way of looking for the second Marsh Harrier in as many weeks to go through the 10km square but something may turn up. What else goes through NZ26 unobserved? Friday, 7 August 2015. Another 37 Black-tailed Godwit dropped into Shibdon to join the single bird remaining from yesterday. We've now had more this year than the total previously recorded, ever. Also here were 9 Shoveler and a brief Kingfisher. An evening visit gave a fly-through Peregrine. Sunday, 31 May 2015. Bothal Pond again this morning where the Black-winged Pratincole was showing well in the rain. No sign of the Gull-billed Tern. At Cresswell a Little Gull dropped onto the spit, where 6 Avocet were on nests and the first eggs hatching. Saturday, 8 August 2015. All quiet for birds in Gateshead today. Just a single Black-tailed Godwit at Shibdon this morning. A bit of sun meant a trip to Kibblesworth Brickworks was rewarded by some tantalising views of 4-5 Purple Hairstreak in the oak tops. Purple Hairstreak- the best I could manage! Tuesday, 11 August 2015. More of the same. Again Shibdon held 24 Black-tailed Godwit, a Green Sandpiper and a Grey Wagtail. Went further north than yesterday and headed up to Newton. No great excitement, but the scrape held 28 Black-tailed Godwit, 50 Dunlin, 3 Ruff and a Greenshank. A Toad was out in the sun. September 16, 2016. On the way down we stopped randomly for a scan. 1 calandra lark , 1 kestrel and three Chocolate Marsh Harriers . In the woodland nuthatch and short toed treecreeper but no Sicilian long tailed tit . Have to come back this cop pice chestnut woodland is incredible. Fungi hunters coming out of the woods in battered Fiats and truffle hounds gave authenticity and we even got good information on Nesting Bonnelis eagle for next time.
