From the Basement: September 2013
http://nathanielanddorothy.blogspot.com/2013_09_01_archive.html
We don't actually live in a basement anymore. Thursday, September 19, 2013. Daddy Daughter Date at Arches. A few weeks ago Summer was watching a nature show on Netflix about erosion. Of course, many of the most spectacular examples of erosion are in Arches National Park, and I decided that Summer had to see the place before we left. So we planned a trip. But it made for a fun bonding experience for Nathaniel and Summer. They had a great time. Summer especially loved the sand. 160;Links to this post.

We don't actually live in a basement anymore. Thursday, June 11, 2015. A few days ago, I took Summer to her ice skating lesson while Nathaniel had lunch with a friend. He finished much later than we did, so Summer and I walked to a playground after she was done skating. Turns out playgrounds are a little boring when you're the only kid there. It was hot and sunny and there are only so many times you can do the monkey bars before you start to wonder why you're doing it in the first place. The remaining fi...
From the Basement: Why I Won't Tell My Kids They're Smart

We don't actually live in a basement anymore. Sunday, March 2, 2014. Why I Won't Tell My Kids They're Smart. When someone calls my kids smart, I wince. I know they mean well, and I do very much appreciate it anytime someone gives my children positive attention, especially to compliment them. But I take great pains not to call my kids smart because I think it's one of the most counter-productive things I can do. When you play this game, it makes you smarter! You can see where I'm going with this. I don't ...
From the Basement: Cooking with Kids
http://nathanielanddorothy.blogspot.com/2014/04/cooking-with-kids.html
We don't actually live in a basement anymore. Tuesday, April 8, 2014. Kids ruin everything, don’t they? Before they started being interesting and wanting to get involved in everything I do, cooking and baking were soothing activities. Chopping vegetables and measuring flour were flow activities. Kids in the kitchen, around knives and heat, can be scary. But I can’t protect them forever, right? Henry gets in on the action too. He is 22 months, and he:. Pours after I measure. Cracks eggs into a pan. Really...

at the sidewalk's end: Like A Disease, or Way of Kissing People
http://atthesidewalksend.blogspot.com/2013/04/people-will-talk.html
Sunday, April 28, 2013. Like A Disease, or Way of Kissing People. I have yet to really get back into the habit of quoting, but this is what I have for you, in honor of the end of the semester. I don't know what these quotes say to you, but I think it's fairly clear from them that 1) I go to a church school, 2) I am an English major, and 3) I have really weird friends. If he ever came to date my daughter, I would remove him. From the earth.". Your bodily functions are stupid.". Your mom's face- ". Have gr...

http://atthesidewalksend.blogspot.com/2012/04/martin-luther-king-had-dream-i-would.html
Monday, April 30, 2012. Martin Luther King Had a Dream. I Would Like One. Well, friends. I'm home. I've been thinking, in the midst of my sickness and general post-finals exhaustion, and I haven't got a clue what I want to do with my life. I met people at college who knew what they wanted. Thayne is going to study stars- the details of this may not yet be ironed out, but there are definitely stars on his horizon (that pun was just for you, mom. because i love you). It isn't that I thought I would die.

I don't have leprosy, but I don't have a BMW either. Tuesday, February 22, 2011. These three things (of orient are.). Once I took one of those intensive summer classes, the kind that is 3 hours every day for 6 weeks. A great way to knock out language credit AND a great solution for natural procrastinators- the semester is so short you don't have TIME to get behind! Do you remember the old, old video from junior high health class with the catchy tune: "The health of man! Saturday, February 19, 2011. I am ...

I don't have leprosy, but I don't have a BMW either. Sunday, January 30, 2011. In reality I'm somewhere in between. Things that make me sound meaner/grumpier than I am:. I am pro-pregnancy and pro-reproduction, but there are few things I dislike more than bare belly pregnancy shots, especially at like 6-12 weeks when it's an excuse to flash your nasty snicket midriff. BLECH! Okay, okay, we get it, we get it. You're slender and buff and vain. What do you want, a trophy? Remember how I just learned to sew?

I don't have leprosy, but I don't have a BMW either. Thursday, April 25, 2013. Because last weekend ran me over like a truck! Is my new mantra, which I say at least thrice a day to kind-hearted strangers who tell me "Oh, sweetheart, you've got your hands full! Truly, "chaos is healthy" is the name of the game lately and it may end up tattooed on my rump if this continues. Regardless, I love him. I should have guarded my maternity leave more closely; I ended up doing more work earlier than I should have; ...

I don't have leprosy, but I don't have a BMW either. Sunday, June 23, 2013. I woke up super early this morning with a lot on my mind. (The early wakeup was unfortunate since my cute four-month-old chose to sleep a record 10ish hours, but hey, we're all doing what we can here.). This is long but it's my blog and I do what I want so stick with me here, if you would. For years, I have always pictured the Brother of Jared kind of sheepish in that moment of saying, "Um, how about these rocks? I feel like that...

I don't have leprosy, but I don't have a BMW either. Tuesday, May 22, 2012. Unsolicited YW advice: Part 1. Sooooo, I have a lot of unsolicited advice to give about YW (meaning teen girls at church), and if there's one things blogs are for, it's spouting unsolicited advice! Am I right or am I right? So, let me climb aboard my e-soapbox and share a few grouchy tidbits. Gurrbonzo's Grouchy Bits of Advice for YW Leaders: Part 1. 1) It's not about you! On a related note, be the grown up. It's a tough balance,...

I don't have leprosy, but I don't have a BMW either. Tuesday, April 05, 2011. Ready, set, GO! First, this is the best, best, best homemade playdough in the universe and I have been enjoying it for ages and shan't keep it from you any longer. The texture! The ease of both creation and clean up! Second, are you watching America's Next Great Restaurant? We are and I'm loving it. The behind-the-scenes (design a logo! Figure out a menu! Present your brains out! Third, I think congratulations-fatigue is a real...

Hancock Family Happenings
Nathaniel, Felicity, William, Cameron, and Baby Andrew. Monday, January 06, 2014. We celebrated New Years with a family hike at Cunningham Falls state park. It was cold, but a fun way to get out of the house! Happiness is rocks to climb on. Keepin the little one steady. :). Snack break with cousin O. He was annoyed I wouldn't let him pee in the woods (with the nat'l park guide right behind us. otherwise I would have. haha! Looking for "bish" in the water. She was so good! Adventures in Alaska
A look into our second year of teaching and marriage in Bush Alaska. Saturday, May 17, 2014. The End of Our Alaskan Adventure. We have been in the moving process this month. Moving 4,000 miles takes some serious planning. We have had a total of 3 yard sales, trying to lighten the amount of things we have to ship back. Happy with his yard sale purchase. I cleaned out the pantry, and gave our remaining food to a local friend who has four children. We set the third bed back up in our workout room. My classr...
