The wiki evolved from Ward Cunningham’s user-editable pattern repository which started in 1995 and became known as the Portland Pattern Repository which became a useful documentation tool for writing an encyclopedia. We need to documentso that we know what we are doing. If we do not document, we cannot learn from our history, and are doomed to repeat it.

Notes from a young teacher. Beyond Stereotypes, Gaming can provide actual skills. March 2, 2016. March 2, 2016. Let me start by saying that the majority of my knowledge about World of Warcraft comes from representations in the media, particularly the television shows, The Big Bang Theory and South Park. It is almost needless to say that these representations are not always flattering to the WOW player. In her book,. My Life as a Night Elf Priest: An Anthropological Account of World of Warcraft. The Bottom Line in Education: Real Student Learning | edukention

https://edukention.wordpress.com/2016/02/18/the-bottom-line-in-education-real-student-learning

Education and Teacher Education Today. The Bottom Line in Education: Real Student Learning. February 18, 2016. Measurement in capitalism is pretty easy: It’s profit. You can tell how effective something is by how much money it makes. Education is actually just this easy. What we should measure, the only thing we should care about, the only discussion we should have, the only thing we should fund, the absolute bottom line is: Student Learning. Real Student Learning is Difficult and Expensive to Measure.

Education and Teacher Education Today. A Dirty, Little Secret in K-12 Education. January 2, 2016. January 2, 2016. Something that has troubled me for years in the field of education is the way in which new teachers are often treated. A loyal member of the profession, I don’t like pointing out issues with my colleagues; but this is something that has irked me for a long time and should stop. Bluntly put: The teaching profession eats its young. The newest teachers are given the hardest assignments. General...

Education and Teacher Education Today. 5 Tips for Managing the Grading Grind. November 5, 2016. November 5, 2016. There’s simply no question that one of the primary challenges of teaching is coping with the constant barrage of grading and responding to student writing. I love teaching and I even love reading student writing; but like every teacher I know, I HATE having a stack of papers waiting for me. But responding to student work is a crucial aspect of the job. What’s a busy teacher to do? Some teache...

Grading Student Writing Objectively: A Myth and a Trap | edukention

Education and Teacher Education Today. Grading Student Writing Objectively: A Myth and a Trap. December 8, 2016. December 18, 2016. Many newer teachers and non-specialists believe that above all else, teachers should be objective when they grade student writing. That is, they should grade based on fact, not bias. After all, this kind of thinking goes, isn’t it wrong to judge student work subjectively, bringing one’s own thoughts, beliefs, and perspectives to bear on student work? Plato knew this, and he ...

Education and Teacher Education Today. To Ed Policy-Makers: Take the Danza Challenge. December 22, 2016. Since before the Common Core State Standards were just a flicker in David Coleman’s eyes, education reformers with no experience as public school teachers have been trying–within increasing success–to impose their ideas onto public schools. An Unlikely Model: Tony Danza. A few years ago I was given the opportunity to meet with Tony Danza who had recently published. The meeting never happened, as the a...

Do Teachers Like Their Students? This One Does | edukention

Education and Teacher Education Today. Do Teachers Like Their Students? February 14, 2016. February 19, 2016. I’ve been hearing in general and reading, mostly on Facebook, a lot of complaints lately about young people. The usual rants. You know: lazy, entitled, bad manners, bad grammar, and on and on. I fight these attitudes when I have the time (and the patience), but it has also reminded me of how important “liking students” is to be an effective teacher. Why Does Liking Students Matter? There is no mo...

Monday, January 2, 2017. 10 Things I Would Tell My “Younger” Yoga Teacher Self. A few years ago I was given the opportunity to reflect on the principles and lessons I had gleaned from several years of teaching yoga. It came to me as a list and was essentially the things I would tell my “younger” yoga teacher self. They also happen to be things that I am still learning. Offer what only you can give. That is enough. I am learning to celebrate that. This is the practice of vairagya. Have your own practice.

Notes from a Young Journalist. This blog follows the early career of a young journalist, Janine Armstrong. Monday, February 28, 2011. Is It A Young Journalist Thing, Or Is It Just Me? I noticed something that I do every time I contact someone for an interview. I always make a script. I state my name, the newspaper, and the nature of my call. Nothing has changed in this country yet, but, alhamdullilah, at least an internationally recognized commission has provided some validity to their struggle and to the atrocities that have occurred here.
