Notes from Ceylon: A Thousand Years Ago, Today
http://notesfromceylon.blogspot.com/2014/06/millennium-by-tom-holland-this-is.html
I write from where my heart dwells: the beloved, vanished land of my nativity. A Thousand Years Ago, Today. Genuinely ‘memorable’ (if not very likeable). Castles, in short, were among the earliest instruments of the process of dispossession and enclosure that, over long centuries, concentrated more and more of Europe’s resources in the hands of fewer and fewer people, until it was halted (temporarily) by the French Revolution eight hundred years later. Notes from Ceylon: Empire Bust
http://notesfromceylon.blogspot.com/2014/08/empire-bust.html
I write from where my heart dwells: the beloved, vanished land of my nativity. The Man Who Saved Britain. A fanatical, mean-spirited little book, intermittently amusing, in which the author proposes on purely circumstantial evidence that the popularity of the James Bond books and films is due to the consolation they provided to (mostly conservative) Britons traumatised by the loss of the British Empire and their country’s economic collapse after the Second World War. And the movie version of Goldfinger.

I write from where my heart dwells: the beloved, vanished land of my nativity. Smoke on the Water. I’ve been discontented with some of Mr Ghosh's recent offerings. The Glass Palace. Seemed to me overly discursive, meandering and ultimately without much point, since the story of origins he was tracing was of interest principally to him, and he failed to make it interesting to me. The Hungry Tide. It’s a good thing it didn’t, quite, because this sequel to Sea of Poppies. That Deeti, the escapee from suttee.

I write from where my heart dwells: the beloved, vanished land of my nativity. Still the Best of A Bad Lot. The Life and Death of Democracy. The case he makes for this view of democracy is powerful; it convinced me. I learnt a lot from this book — which traces the growth of democracy back to such unlikely roots as the Code of Hammurabi and the Cortes. Links to this post. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Three of us cooking. Three of us cooking. Queer is normal – Payal Dhar’s Eternal World. Well, irrespective of what anyone says, said Noah, Stephen’s family consists of Jan. All right? 13 year old] Maya digested that. Stephen and Jan? She repeated. Are you sure? They’re always fighting . Absolutely sure. They’ve been together for twenty-five years or so. I mean , said Maya thoughtfully, like, are you sure? That’s a funny kind of family. Oh , said Maya. I thought you had to be related. A Shadow in Eternity.

Notes from Carroll Gardens
Notes from Carroll Gardens. Sunday, January 2, 2011. The pictures are a week after the storm dumped 20 inches in Central Park and wind blew some impressive drifts, like the one in our backyard. Mary was buried up to her chin. With it 50 degrees today, much of it has already melted. Sunday, September 26, 2010. Saturday, September 25, 2010. A September Saturday was the perfect time to buy some pine nuts at Sahadi's and harvest the basil in the backyard. As for our other crops, the tomatoes fell to blig...

Notes from cedar hills. Give Up Control To Experience Real Freedom. August 16, 2015. Life Is A River. The kitchen is primarily my domain. I cook our meals every day. I decide the weekly menu, I decide what ingredient is placed on what shelf in the kitchen and I take the responsibility of feeding us on a daily basis. Sometimes there’s a lot of grumbling involved. Sometimes I complain that I have to cook every single day, even when I’m tired. 10 Things I Wish I’d Known In My 20s. August 12, 2015. This is t...

Notes from Ceylon
Jottings, rants and book reviews from a place that no longer exists. Colombo, 1998, S. Godage. I’m Sinhalese. It says so on my birth certificate, just as it did on my father’s. Like me, he was the son of a Eurasian mother, but this is how it works in Sri Lanka: your ‘race’, as noted in official records, is always deemed to be that of your father. Not that any real Sinhalese were fooled. They can tell a mile off that someone is sankara. 8211; suffering and sorrow are preordained, unavoidable. The effect o...

Eliza in Bangladesh | Notes from a year in Chittagong
Notes from a year in Chittagong. November 28, 2013. Since I’ve neglected to provide much written description of life in Chittagong, below are some stories (supplemented with photos) of random moments and thoughts of the last month or so. It’s 5:45 am and I’m fast walking down an almost entirely deserted street in my running shoes. The occasional rickshaw wallah and random pedestrian give me strange looks as I power by. I’m on my way to AUW’s varsity basketball practice. It’s a hartal. Day, but hartal.
