Confessions of an NZ PropellerHead

Confessions of an NZ PropellerHead. WHAT WAS I WORRYING ABOUT! Hi there again - long time no post, eh? I haven't done as much flying as I would have wished this year what with work, home, overseas trips and weather. So, I was a little daunted about the airspace changes around Hamilton which came into force on 10 November. I had been to the pilots meeting at the club a few weeks ago which was very informative but there's nothing like the real thing, yes? So, on the third downwind I requested a 18 West dep...

Confessions of an NZ PropellerHead: September 2014

http://nzprophead.blogspot.com/2014_09_01_archive.html

Confessions of an NZ PropellerHead. Club competition time again - how time flies! Day one. A bit cloudy but well flyable with a strengthening south-easterly breeze so Grass runway 07R was marked out for the landing grid. Started fine with steady 80Kt in the climb, remembering lookout, downwind checks and nice and steady at 70Kt on base, two stages flap and then the turn to final close to 500' agl, full flap and trimming for nominated speed of 60Kt. Looking good? We had to extend downwind on tower's instr...

Confessions of an NZ PropellerHead: BACK IN THE LEFT HAND SEAT

http://nzprophead.blogspot.com/2014/07/back-in-left-hand-seat.html

Confessions of an NZ PropellerHead. BACK IN THE LEFT HAND SEAT. Well, it's been a while ( 3 months), as they say, but it's time, long overdue, for another post. I had been away (UK and Canada) for a month, mid-May to mid-June and, thanks to some truly awful weather had four bookings cancelled since getting back. WIT awaits in the early morning sun. The first circuit went really well with a good landing and all I forgot was the fuel pump switch to on at pre-takeoff (tut, tut! Next step, current on 172s.

Confessions of an NZ PropellerHead: THE FRUSTRATING LITTLE MATTER OF THE BFR

http://nzprophead.blogspot.com/2013/11/the-frustrating-little-matter-of-bfr.html

Confessions of an NZ PropellerHead. THE FRUSTRATING LITTLE MATTER OF THE BFR. I may not be the most organised person on the planet but I thought I had things well sorted for getting my BFR (biennial flight review - that is, going through all the elements of a PPL flight test with an instructor who then "signs you off" for another two years) done and dusted by my anniversary date of 18th October. Well, best laid plans and all that. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). View my complete profile.

Confessions of an NZ PropellerHead: ABORT, ABORT!

http://nzprophead.blogspot.com/2014/04/abort-abort.html

Confessions of an NZ PropellerHead. Having not done any cross-country flying for some time I thought it was about time I did something more than just a local flight and a few circuits here at Hamilton or flying the Stearman when we are over "at the beach". And when my rather-nervous-flyer wife said she would like to come on a flight over to Tauranga for an expensive coffee while I went up in the Stearman it seemed too good an opportunity to miss. 300 rpm drop at least! After that we took off from 18R wit...

Confessions of an NZ PropellerHead: IT'S BEEN A WHILE....

http://nzprophead.blogspot.com/2015/07/its-been-while.html

Confessions of an NZ PropellerHead. IT'S BEEN A WHILE. As they say, about 10 months, in fact! So , why no posts? Well, I haven't done a great deal of interesting flying, have been more busy at work and moved house late last year. It also seems I got out of the habit of writing on this blog. So, time for an update. Checking fuel drains aren't still blocked, seeing that the water has re-frozen on the shady side and doing it again. One of those "fun" jobs just above the level of cleaning out a chemical ...

Making a Kiwi Fly: And not a moment too soon

http://flyinkiwi.blogspot.com/2014/10/and-not-moment-too-soon.html

Making a Kiwi Fly. My flying story from never been in a light plane before to PPL and beyond! Wednesday, October 29, 2014. And not a moment too soon. I went up in a Tecnam P2008 to get current again. When I opened the door I was greeted with a placard on the instrument panel stating that Vfe had been changed from 68 knots to 80 knots. You may remember I made comments about this when I first flew one. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). View my complete profile. And not a moment too soon. Ziln NZ Airside ...

Making a Kiwi Fly: As the silly season descends

Making a Kiwi Fly. My flying story from never been in a light plane before to PPL and beyond! Thursday, December 18, 2014. As the silly season descends. Just a quick catch up. Three things I want to talk about. Chris has kindly given permission for me to link his quite exquisite photos, if you look carefully at the map above I have placed the approximate location they were taken in order. 1 Westbound looking towards Kawhia Harbour. 2 Interesting rock formation off the coast at 700' AGL and 123 knots.

Making a Kiwi Fly. My flying story from never been in a light plane before to PPL and beyond! Thursday, September 18, 2014. We had the club competitions recently to determine who would represent the club at the regionals. I entered my favourite competition and the one I am the defending champ, the liferaft drop. What was different this year was that we were going to use a Piper Pa28 Cherokee 181 Archer for the drop rather than the tried and true 172M JGP. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Stories from the Sky.

Making a Kiwi Fly. My flying story from never been in a light plane before to PPL and beyond! PS As a footnote I am about to tick over 200 hours total time and 100 hours PIC this year. 3) Yes - and a lot of fun it was too. Lets look forward to 2014:. 1) Flight in the twin (or the 180). 2) Pass my BFR. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

Making a Kiwi Fly: July 2014

http://flyinkiwi.blogspot.com/2014_07_01_archive.html

Making a Kiwi Fly. My flying story from never been in a light plane before to PPL and beyond! Monday, July 21, 2014. After 45 minutes of coaxing all the ice off, I got the preflight done and we set about starting it up. The Archer 3 is always started on the left magneto only (don't ask me why, I don't know). After it turns over you press the button to engage the right magneto and set the throttle to maintain 1000rpm, which required a bit more than I thought because the engine was very cold. Some brief re...

Making a Kiwi Fly. My flying story from never been in a light plane before to PPL and beyond! Monday, March 02, 2015. This years competitions was held in Whitianga, just like it was when I competed in them 9 years ago. Oh why was I going if I wasn't competing? I got the ARFOR (area forecast) printed off, and it was pessimistic as usual:. VIZ: 30km, reducing to 6000m in SHRA, to 4000m in SHRA. WX: Few SHRA developing afternoon, isol SHRA over inland areas, clearing tonight. After getting all my gear stowe...

http://yafk.blogspot.com/2015/04/ctwo.html

Yet Another Flying Kiwi. Diary of a Commercial Pilot (chasing his dream in a foreign land). Wednesday, 22 April 2015. Most pilots are familiar with the "CTWO " concept. A quick briefing of important safety related factors (Charts, Terrain, Weather, Operational Threats) before take off to ensure everyone is aware of possible issues and how we can help mitigate them. Flying in Papua makes for some interesting briefings. Here is mine from earlier this afternoon at Ilu. With a visual aid ;). Making a Kiwi Fly.
