One Teacher's Perspective: August 2013
http://oneteachersperspective.blogspot.com/2013_08_01_archive.html
Saturday, August 24, 2013. Embrace Yesterday and Today for Tomorrow. Monday I “officially” report for my 11th year of teaching in Janesville’s public schools. This year, however, will be my first season of servicing Janesville without a negotiated contract between the district and my teachers union. Constitutionality of Act 10 is still in question and now before the Wisconsin State Supreme Court. My district and union are forced to stumble together into uncharted territory this upcoming school year.
One Teacher's Perspective: Teacher Strong
http://oneteachersperspective.blogspot.com/2015/01/teacher-strong.html
Thursday, January 1, 2015. A whopping two blog posts published in 2014. There is not much good about grief, Charlie Brown. Grief dug in and dragged me down this past year. The initial stages of grief- all necessary and normal, the experts say- left me feeling unhealthy in many ways. Spiritually, emotionally, intellectually, and psychologically- I was dribble. Close friends and family did not recognize me. Grief left me despondent, unmotivated, scattered, and self-absorbed. Sure, the day-to-day grind gets...
One Teacher's Perspective: Walker's Act 10 Devalues Teaching in Wisconsin
http://oneteachersperspective.blogspot.com/2014/03/walkers-act-10-devalues-teaching-in.html
Sunday, March 2, 2014. Walker's Act 10 Devalues Teaching in Wisconsin. Wisconsin Teacher Value Not Adding Up. My first teaching contract 19 years ago at a Midwest Catholic high school grossed $15,000. My retirement benefits consisted of a whopping $500 401K. Cutting into my take-home pay was a $1500 annual premium for an inadequate health insurance plan with a high deductible and 80-20 coverage on remaining family medical bills. Growing up on the lower rim of the middle class. In these conditions, my tea...

Saturday, November 30, 2013. Meritless Pursuit of Pay-for-Performance. The history of merit pay in schools is almost as old as public education in America. It has failed many times over and in many forms. Many have pursued pay-for-performance (PfP) for teachers as a panacea for alleged public school ills. Progressives and conservatives have promoted it. Both President G.W. Bush and President Obama have supported it. . Chapter 12 of Diane Ravitchs brilliant new book, Reign of Error,. Links to this post.
One Teacher's Perspective: October 2013

Wednesday, October 2, 2013. Turn This Ship Around. My good friend, Fr. Joe Zimmerman, chimes in this week with his own review of Diane Ravitchs new book, Reign of Error. Zimmerman blogs at ivyrosary.blogspot.com. Author of fourteen books on education, she has been awarded the Daniel Patrick Moynihan Prize sponsored by the American Academy of Political and Social Science, and like Moynihan, takes opinions from both sides of the political spectrum seriously. Where Education and Stage Management Come Together. Sunday, September 1, 2013. Patricia Reilly Giff is always a jointly safe and exciting pick for me, because her work is historical, smart, funny, poignant, and most of all true. Her books also truly honor children and young adults, both her characters and her audience members, for all that they have learned, all they are now experiencing, and all they can become. Where Education and Stage Management Come Together. Tuesday, December 3, 2013. One for the Murphys. Lynda Hunt gives us a heroine we can't help but root for, more often than not because her seemingly outlandish behavior is recognizable as our own, despite her extreme circumstances. Carley does what so many of us do: she numbs the pain and builds the wall, then balks entirely when someone breaks through it with genuine kindness. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). One Teacher's Adventures
My thoughts, ideas, and adventures while teaching K-12. Saturday, 24 September 2016. Family Photo Shoot on the Windiest Day of the Year! This year for Mother's Day, my siblings and I got my mom a family photo shoot. We haven't had family photos taken with everyone since my grandparents' 50th wedding anniversary 8 years ago. My nieces and nephew weren't alive yet, so we needed updated versions! As I kept reminding my mom, it just made the photos look more whimsical :). Here are some of my favourite shots.

One Teacher's Journey
Sunday, March 8, 2009. Wellit has been quite a week. Quite an emotional week. For those of you that teach, you understand the friendships that we develop as we teach side by side with each other. I have found that my school is a bit different.different in a great way. We really are a very tight staff. Not only are we close to those we teach with at our grade level, but each staff member. This pneumonia just won't go away. Well, his mother noticed his belly was a bit swollen, so she took him in to see...

Method in the Madness. Because the course of teaching never did run smooth. A Teaching Couple’s Experience at an International Job Fair. My husband (a Physics teacher) and I recently returned from an international job fair. We were fortunate to come out of the experience with new jobs and many positive experiences, but the process is so intense that I’d be happy not to go through it again anytime soon. What our job search looked like behind the scenes. With a healthy dose of cynicism). We looked for chur...

One Teacher's Perspective
Saturday, November 4, 2017. The Air Still Stinks. After a trail race last winter, I gagged entering a park restroom serving as a makeshift locker room for sweaty, muddy runners. 8220;It smells like crap in here,” I complained as I contemplated an immediate exit. However, with freezing temperatures outside, I had no choice but to endure the stench. Trying to ignore my odor-induced nausea, I cornered some space for my backpack and quickly got to work cleaning up. Walker’s wind has brought in an air o...
One Teacher's Take... is Another's Treasure!
Thursday, August 6, 2015. Made it Monday, but Posting Thursday! So here's my take…. Lucky me doesn't have to report back until August 31st,. So I am busy creating things for my classroom! I wanted a subway art sign for all to see when they enter my classroom. I found the right saying, but not the right design for me,. I had to make my own! I love the bright colors and the dots! As soon as I made it I had to put it up! I will have the poster in my TpT store if you would like one for your room. From Montgo...

Capturing all that God is teaching me through travel and service. By God’s grace and mighty power, I have been given the privilege of serving him by spreading this Good News. Eph. 3:7. Friday, March 8, 2013. Dear Friends and Family,.
