Adventures of a Science Modeler

Adventures of a Science Modeler. Yeah I'm working on that. Tuesday, July 8, 2014. Standards Based Grading: A primer. How do we tell our students that it is ok to make mistakes and yet not have a grading system that allows for this? Grading has always been a particular beef for me and I am sure like most of you, your grading system is eerily similar to a teacher you once had. The problem is that I think many of us never considered what our grades actually mean? What does a C on a quiz tell a student?

Adventures of a Science Modeler: December 2011

http://www.physicsmodeler.blogspot.com/2011_12_01_archive.html

Adventures of a Science Modeler. Yeah I'm working on that. Wednesday, December 7, 2011. Ok I started this post on Nov. 11th! Time to finish it up don't you think? We whiteboard ideas. We have socratic dialogues about the labs we have completed. We analyze texts and problem solve and think. We research current issues and hold debates. My students are getting a conceptual grounding in what make Biology so important. And the tide is turning my way. You need to give us more homework! Links to this post.

Adventures of a Science Modeler: June 2011

http://www.physicsmodeler.blogspot.com/2011_06_01_archive.html

Adventures of a Science Modeler. Yeah I'm working on that. Tuesday, June 28, 2011. Why I am excited today. What a blast these last two days have been. I have had the opportunity to visit with this year's crop of modeling workshop participants. It seems crazy to me that only 1 year ago I was in their shoes. It seems like such a long time ago. I have grown so much as an educator in the last year. This post is directed at these new "new modelers". 1 Well it is a lot less of a time waster than facebook.

Adventures of a Science Modeler. Yeah I'm working on that. Tuesday, September 25, 2012. Why you need to master the standards. I'm wrapping up my intro to graphing and whiteboarding labs this week and will be moving on to constant motion next week. Can't wait! I'm getting standards-based-grading for my teaching. So excited. Understanding Confusion | h walks into a bar

https://hwalksintoabar.wordpress.com/2011/08/17/understanding-confusion

H walks into a bar. A physics teacher walks on the web. Asymp; 2 Comments. More and more, I not only try to teach Physics, but I try to teach my students something about learning as well. I want them to know that when they struggle, their experiences are normal. They’re in the 9th grade. They are just learning to think. Learning to think necessarily drags one through…. And you know what? This is a good thing. All of the sudden, their brains are in conflict with their guts. Hooray! Believe me, some folks.

Differentiation on the Tennis Court | vsphysics

https://vsphysics.wordpress.com/2012/04/15/differentiation-on-the-tennis-court-6

Thoughts about teaching physics. Differentiation on the Tennis Court. April 15, 2012. Would I call the practice a success? Hmm It was certainly not optimum. The better kids were bored at times, and were seen texting between rallys. The weaker kids were overwhelmed and lost at times, and I fear subjecting them to such a direct comparison with the other more talented (and sometimes younger) kids will damage their confidence. Instructors. Can we really expect. Is scarily too close to reality. You are commen...

Thoughts about teaching physics. July 27, 2011. Do College Admission Policies Provide Motivation for Sit-n-Get Education? This summer I’ve joined Twitter and begun blogging, and what I’ve read from both about getting students to “do” science has really resonated with me and inspired me. As a former engineer, I’ve always agreed with this and designed a very active and hands-on curriculum during the 8 years I’ve been teaching. She has a point. Make Teachers Classroom Students | vsphysics

https://vsphysics.wordpress.com/2012/04/15/make-teachers-classroom-students

Thoughts about teaching physics. Make Teachers Classroom Students. April 15, 2012. As I mentioned in a previous post, I coach HS tennis. Last week I sensed our HS team was at a plateau with our practice routine. They were not getting a sense of the intensity and aggression I wanted to see on the court. So in an inspired moment, I decided to practice. To be a good student? What benefit could there be to the students if there was an adult teacher sitting next to them? How to do quality work on assignments.

Thoughts about teaching physics. More on Grade Inflation. January 7, 2012. What would you do if you were a parent in one of these cases? Wouldn’t you want your son or daughter to go to the school that gives the highest grades? What else are you paying for, really? Character education is nice, but colleges don’t measure that (as far as you know). Wouldn’t you send your son or daughter to a school that “informally guarantees” a minimum grade? Where does this end? From → Thoughts and Ideas. You are commenti...

Importance of Physics

Thursday, September 23, 2010. Let us learn about bivariate correlation. Is referred as a measure of the extent when the change in 1 variable are associated or followed by the change in the other variable. 2 variables which are connected in such a way are known as bivariate population. Best example, the yield of a crop varies with the amount of rainfall and so on. In our next blog we shall learn about advantages of asexual reproduction. Wednesday, September 22, 2010. Physics Mistakes | If you don't make mistakes, you're not working on hard enough problems. And that's a big mistake. — Frank Wilczek

If you don't make mistakes, you're not working on hard enough problems. And that's a big mistake. Frank Wilczek. February 10, 2013. Students were given the following problem:. A dense stone is tossed vertically into the air with an initial speed of 25 m/s. Represent how ball’s motion changes in a “step-by-step” diagram. By elaborating and specifying aspects of your diagram, determine the maximum height. In what way does their work “make sense” to them? February 5, 2013. Speed at an Instant. What kinds of...

Falling ball experiment

Domingo, 11 de mayo de 2014. How will balls dropped from different height affect plasticine when they drop on to it? I think if the ball is higher the mark in the. Will be deeper than if you through it lower, because the higher the falling ball is the more it speeds up, so it will accelerate making the depth of the flosorb solution deeper. The size of the crater varies with the kinetic energy of the ball at impact. In this research,. The relationship between the kinetic energy of ball, dropped into.
