Pilgrim/Heretic

Monday, October 08, 2012. The sincerest form of flattery. There was a lovely piece by Michael Erard. In the New York Times a couple of weeks ago about how we tend to echo the styles of the things we read most often. It's called "structural priming" or "syntactic persistence" (I love both these terms), and it's almost like muscle memory, how our brains form habits in relating words to each other in predictable patterns. Pilgrim/Heretic: February 2010

http://pilgrimheretic.blogspot.com/2010_02_01_archive.html

Sunday, February 07, 2010. You mean I was supposed to do this more than once a year? The clear fashion trend for women 25-50 here is to wear long tunic-sweaters over leggings with boots. Or very narrow pants. All my nice floppy-leg pants are not going to fit in so well. Good thing I gave up on fitting in several years ago. The day after tomorrow, I get to start digging into the Inquisition archives. Harder to read, but so much fun. Oh, hey, the Superbowl's starting! Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

Pilgrim/Heretic: echoes

http://pilgrimheretic.blogspot.com/2012/09/echoes.html

Wednesday, September 05, 2012. Oh, and dang it all, the demise of HaloScan (and Blogger's insistence that I update my template, because it's been dog years since I updated anything around here) means that all of our previous conversations have poofed into the void. That was really most of the life around here! Nothing funny at the moment, but it sure is nice to see you back! Thanks for coming over. :). Inspiration for me :-). Pilgrim/Heretic: September 2008

http://pilgrimheretic.blogspot.com/2008_09_01_archive.html

Monday, September 15, 2008. Can I buy an indulgence? I think it says something about my state of mind at this point (how in the world did I manage to get so far behind, so early in the semester? That I saw an e-mail promoting Classroom Performance Systems, and misread it as Classroom Penance Systems. Wednesday, September 03, 2008. We're working in the shared study, where the LWI is putzing around online while the radio plays Semisonic and Matchbox 20 in the background. LWI: We're going back to the 90's!

Life (in Someplace Else): August 2006

http://lifeinsomeplaceelse.blogspot.com/2006_08_01_archive.html

Though the words we speak are banal, not one of them's a lie. Sunday, August 27, 2006. Perhaps I am an engineer and I didn't know it, but I've read and loved nearly all the works on this list. Posted by cieux autres at 8:46 PM. Thursday, August 24, 2006. SkyGirl and the flood. SkyGirl and the flood. Originally uploaded by cieuxautres. Two people were rescued from cars and even now, 8 or so hours after the storm, the water is still pouring through the wash. Here are some other photos. From the local paper.

Dr. Moonbeam: What makes it worthwhile

http://drmoonbeam.blogspot.com/2007/04/what-makes-it-worthwhile.html

Tuesday, April 24, 2007. What makes it worthwhile. I was honored by the History Club, the undergraduate group in my department, at our annual departmental banquet last Friday; they chose me as the Professor of the Year. I was surprised and pleased and very touched. Sometimes it's hard to remember that all the work isn't wholly unappreciated, after all. That is a wonderful honor and it has to make all of the hard work seem more worthwhile! Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Bloggy Friends and Family.

Monday, November 13, 2006. Winding down the semester. It's the week before Thanksgiving, unbelievably. Which means four more weeks of classes, and then finals week. Ack! Where did the time disappear to! Sighs* I'll manage, of course, but suddenly my schedule seems far busier than I would like! Links to this post. Friday, November 3, 2006. Invisible Things | Blogenspiel

https://anotherdamnedmedievalist.wordpress.com/2014/12/22/invisible-things

Another damned medievalist delivers her spiel. 22 December, 2014. It appears I have forgotten how to blog. I also have a paper draft ostensibly due tomorrow, and I have every kind of mental block going. I’ve got three blog post drafts, too, all unfinished. So now, I am writing, to prove that I can. Still. Write. Over the last few months about depression and the effects of stress on academics. But what if it’s not easy? New can of worms, that is. I’ve got no real conclusion here. It’s just...Super-late no...

Rereading fic... - Celandine's Chronicle

http://celandineb.livejournal.com/1294279.html

I'm rereading various of my own (and cowritten) old fics, more or less at random. It's rather weird. I don't remember what happens in many of them, so it's almost like reading someone else's stuff, except that the style does still feel familiar. However it's getting on for midnight and I had a pretty busy day (laundry, grocery shopping, lots of cooking) so probably I ought to go to bed now. *yawns*. 14th-Jul-2015 02:26 am (UTC). I feel the same way when I re-read old stuff. It's like, "I wrote that?

Celandine's Chronicle

http://celandineb.livejournal.com/tag/vacation

I got back from vacation on Sunday, actually, but as tends to happen, the pile-up of work during an extended absence has kept me very very busy all week, exacerbated by the fact that our new students arrive shortly and next week will be full of orientation events, then on to the semester. I'm tired just thinking about it. Hoping that everyone else is having a good end-of-summer (or for those in the southern parts of the world, end-of-winter)! See you all on the flip side. So very ready to leave. Overall,...

in favor of thinking: January 2007

In favor of thinking. If I were the Emperor of everything. Three simple rules that would have improved this week, were they followed:. 1) No meeting should be three hours long. Ever. 2) Faculty who don't come to any of the job talks, job candidate interviews, or faculty get-togethers should not be allowed to pontificate in the hiring meeting about candidates they never met. They shouldn't be allowed to vote either. 3) Mel should get 8 hours of sleep every night. Or at least seven. What not to write.

Pilgrims now, Heirs forever

Pilgrims now, Heirs forever. Pilgrims Now, Heirs Forever. These confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth. For those who say such things declare plainly that they seek a homeland. But now they desire a better, that is, a heavenly country (Hebrews 11:13-16). For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Wednesday, August 17, 2011.
