Tis a grand blog. Laquo; Cloak v2.2. Better living through jewellery. Knitting Machine on tour. 30 January, 2014. Last week, TOG had an exhibition of projects. In the gallery at Exchange Dublin. I wanted to include the hacked knitting machine. Took a set of photos. And I created a couple of displays on the wall. Normal knitting, before TOG got involved. Hacked machine and the resulting knitting. On the closing night, I gave a live demo of the contraption:. Knitted a scarf for a capoeirista. Any colour yo...

Tis a grand blog. Laquo; The poetry of NYC. The Colour Stealing Cloak. 30 September, 2013. The Colour Stealing Cloak is version two of the Cloak of Many Lights. It looks similar, with twinkly white lights under layers of organza*. But this one is different. Let’s say I am wearing it of an evening, and I get chatting to someone, and this person is wearing a nice blue hat. Me, looking at their hat: “Oh, I like your hat! It’s a lovely shade of blue! Them: Oh, thank you! I’m going to steal your colour! This ...

Tis a grand blog. Laquo; The Colour Stealing Cloak. Knitting Machine on tour. 12 November, 2013. The Colour Stealing Cloak got some good reactions, but I wasn’t entirely happy with the version. I took to Burning Man. With a Burner party coming up, I wanted to fix some annoying problems:. The solid colour showed up the strings of LEDs too clearly. There was an ugly pause while the colour was detected. The buttons weren’t working properly.*. The colour sense action was too slow. Much better: now the cloak ...

Tis a grand blog. Laquo; Knitting Machine on tour. Better living through jewellery. 31 January, 2014. There are some products. Like this, but they’re big and clunky and poorly reviewed. There are also watch platforms ready for hacking. 8211; but although they have hundreds of features already, they either don’t have vibrating alerts, or they’re not available yet. (They are also expensive and huge.). The gadget I want doesn’t exist. No problem; I’ll just make one*. Vibrate once every N minutes. The circui...

Tis a grand blog. Laquo; Better living through jewellery. 7 April, 2014. Suitcase manufacturers, as far as I can tell, don’t take into account the laws of physics. When they design their products. It’s not that my suitcase is very old. Or that I do as much travelling as some people. But already the wheels have worn down to uselessness so that you have to drag the wretched thing every step of the way, cursing the manufacturer. And thinking that the Sumerians. Could have done a better job. Address never ma...

Tis a grand blog. Laquo; The Not-To-Do List. Just imagine my bliss. Any colour you like. 20 May, 2013. The TwitterKnitter: blew up two not-quite-Arduinos. While mucking about with a servo. Very embarrassing. Apparently I have not yet learned that it is a bad idea to have 5V and GND wires waving about while trying to hold together more other wires than you have fingers for. More haste, less speed. Colour Stealing Cloak: ah, now, this is where it gets interesting…. Posted in Burning Man. 30 September, 2013...

Tis a grand blog. Laquo; To the workshop! The poetry of NYC. 2 August, 2013. Back in the mists of time, Paul brought his knitting machine into TOG. We had a play with it, examined the punchcards and the reader, and had a conversation along the lines of “hey, wouldn’t it be cool if* we could knit our own patterns instead of using these cards? We could even knit tweets and stuff* .”. Empisal Knitmaster 321 with punchcard. Fast forward to the Friday night before the Dublin Mini Maker Faire. And operates the...

Tis a grand blog. Laquo; Just imagine my bliss. 10 July, 2013. A group of us have been working on automating this punchcard knitting machine. But then, disaster struck: the machine was accidentally knocked over one night and two crucial bits of plastic snapped off. These two white ‘thumbscrews’ hold the carriage together for knitting, but let you easily disassemble it to remove the all-too-common wool tangles. These probably haven’t been manufactured in 40 years. Fix attempt #3: to the workshop! The hole...

Tis a grand blog. Laquo; Better, faster, stronger, wiser. 30 April, 2013. 8220;So is it for charity? Do you want us to sponsor you? My mum, on discovering that I’d signed up for a series of 5k running races. Was understandably puzzled. We are not, as a rule, a sporty family, and the last one of these I did. For charity. It involved running around Cheltenham Racecourse*, and a lot of pink. And yes, sponsorship. And before that, I had to endure cross-country at school* , followed by. But this is different.
