Stronsay
Stronsay is an island in Orkney, Scotland situated to the North of the British Isles. Stronsay is part of an extensive group of Islands where the Atlantic Ocean and North Sea meet, known as the Orkney Islands. Stronsay's shape is irregular and its name originates from the Old Norse for Star Island. Stronsay is one of the inhabited islands in the Orkneys. Stronsay lies on latitude 59 north which it shares with Alaska on the North American continent and Stockholm in Europe. A map of the Orkney Islands.

Pronounced Stroan-see: ON Strjonsey. Meanings for the name vary, it was suggested in the past as gain or profit island being both fertile and a good place for fishing, however the name could be related to the Old Norse "strond" beach, or even stiarna - star island, due to its shape. The Dutch were fishing for Herring in Orkney waters in late Norse times and by the 17th century had. Stronsay can be reached daily by sea and air from Kirkwall.

Although most of the island is farmland, the large headland of Rothiesholm is mostly moor, thus there is a large variety of habitat and feeding areas for wildlife. Stronsay harbour is arguably one of the safest in Orkney, having sheltered anchorages and deep water alongside the piers, the harbour is approached via a dredged channel. The school is also another main employer with about 50 pupils from nursery age to 16, the children also have the option of attending Kirkwall Grammar school from the age of 13.
