Pronounced Stroan-see: ON Strjonsey. Although most of the island is farmland, the large headland of Rothiesholm is mostly moor, thus there is a large variety of habitat and feeding areas for wildlife. Stronsay harbour is arguably one of the safest in Orkney, having sheltered anchorages and deep water alongside the piers, the harbour is approached via a dredged channel. The school is also another main employer with about 50 pupils from nursery age to 16, the children also have the option of attending Kirkwall Grammar school from the age of 13.
