Texas is known for its barbecue, and I’m sure that I’ll get to that later, but having just been in one of the barbecue capitals of the world, I was relieved to discover that Ruby’s Barbeque (an Austin institution) is also known for its jambalaya. Jambalaya is a cajun dish, a bit like paella, and usually consists of meat, vegetables, rice and stock. Ruby’s jambalaya was a little light on the vegetables, but made up for it with phenomenal sausage. Filed under: posts by nat. Pickle on the side…. I went for ...

peranakan day | the dining car

https://thediningcar.wordpress.com/2010/03/22/peranakan-day

Lunch with chef kenny. Malacca really is Malaysia’s heart of Peranakan. Culture, and today was a very Peranakan day. We’re staying at the beautiful Majestic Hotel, which also happens to be home to. A health spa offering a unique range of traditional Peranakan treatments. Perhaps the most interesting was the egg-rolling massage, which utilises the “healing powers” of hard-boiled eggs. In our short lesson, Chef Kenny taught us to make 3 traditional Peranakan dishes:. Rini dishing up the Sambal Bendi. Fill ...

First morning at bayan indah. As you will see, the day we did a cooking class at Rohani’s. Bayan Indah Culinary Resort. We had a pretty big day of food. But I digress… the cooking class. Rohani asked us what kind of dishes we’d like to make when we made the booking for. Had I known, I might have made a different choice, but it certainly didn’t make Rohani’s class any less fun. Stir fried four angle beans. 8211; sour fish curry (this is the one I made – not bad hey? Rohani making the dough for the. You ar...

turkey on marble rye | the dining car

Pickle on the side…. Turkey on marble rye. To my mind, there are few things in this world better than a good sandwich, and while every nation has their variants on sandwiches, I think the US has perfected it. There’s nothing flash about this sandwich, but it was just perfect. Turkey, provolone, lettuce, tomato, onion and cucumber, with just the right amount of honey-mustard served on freshly baked marble rye. Filed under: posts by nat. LAX Cuisine | the dining car

So it’s been a while since we updated this blog. Since getting back from our honeymoon, Rini and I have kept busy moving house and settling in to married life. For the next few weeks, I’ll be blogging solo as I ramble around North America for work. I arrived at Los Angeles International Airport early this morning and after choking down two bites of the heinous Qantas bacon and eggs, I went on the hunt for a proper American breakfast. The Dining Car Window. The irregular blog of cross-country train trips. Tuesday, January 19, 2010. The Southern Crescent, New York City, finally, Boston and a Note. Sunday, January 17, 2010, New Orleans, LA 7:05am: After two glorious and far-too-short days in New Orleans we board Amtrak's Southern Crescent. For the 32 hour run to New York City.
