My Year in Books

My Year in Books. Sunday, November 15, 2009. The Cider House Rules. Irving's mastery at characterization is unparalleled and it is apparent in this novel, where each of the characters seem so real and consistent and ultimately, because of that consistency, frustrating. Based on this and the other book of hers I have read (Untouched), Anna Campbell seems to specialize in tortured, psychologically decimated heroes. It is a trope I love, even if I do question, particularly in this case, whether the whol...

My Year in Books: July 2009

http://theyearinbooks.blogspot.com/2009_07_01_archive.html

My Year in Books. Sunday, July 26, 2009. To Pleasure a Prince. Another writer with a back list I can't wait to read. This was the second in a series about the illegitimate sons of the Prince of Wales, and the Duke in this case has been deeply emotionally and physically scarred by the treatment of his horrendous mother and, he believes, his father. Recommended by various reviewers and a very absorbing read - I loved the setting as the tensions between English colonialism, and the realities of taking over ...

My Year in Books: March 2009

My Year in Books. Monday, March 30, 2009. Too Good To Be True. Another enjoyable read from this author (though I would love to read something she did in another POV, all of them have been first person which has a bit of a sameness after a while.). I would have liked Grace to have a little bit more backbone occasionally, but really I guess the premise of the story is her need to people please, and what that leads her to do, so not really surprising that she doesn't stand up for herself until the end.

My Year in Books: Lord of Pleasure

http://theyearinbooks.blogspot.com/2009/11/lord-of-pleasure.html

My Year in Books. Saturday, November 14, 2009. Another great new author to add to my list of must reads! The story had a lot of humor running through it, particularly in the interactions between Charlotte and Alexander - I found myself grinning away for chunks of the story. This dedication to his family is what draws Charlotte to Alexander, beyond her physical attraction to him, and watching them come together and draw emotional as well as physical comfort from each other was such fun to read.

My Year in Books: May 2009

http://theyearinbooks.blogspot.com/2009_05_01_archive.html

My Year in Books. Friday, May 29, 2009. I always find Katie Fforde's novels so enjoyable. They always seem like such a slice of life, with quirky, realistic characters and created in their own very believable little worlds. Wedding Season was no exception in that it was very sweet and fun to read. There was no real conflict or anything anywhere, ie: Bron wanted to leave her boyfriend, was afraid to tell him, in the end she did and. that was that. Again, felt underdeveloped. Wednesday, May 20, 2009. Set i...

And other random things. Find Me On Ravelry! The often absent “blogger”. Posted in Fun with fiber. That’s got a fitting ring to it doesn’t it? Hello folks, I’m back and I’ve missed you all. I didn’t mean to take off, but we have been having a fun busy summer filled with trips to the park and plenty of outdoor fun. Toph and the kids built a fort. We’ve been berry picking. And tubing down the river. Toph has been making ginger ale. And I have been canning. And I’ve managed to get some crochet work in!

The Year in Beer | Month by month and sip by sip.

The Year in Beer. Month by month and sip by sip. Long Trail Unfiltered Pumpkin Ale. November 2, 2014. Bridgewaters Corner, VT. Hazy, deep amber body with a frothy white head. This is pretty much exactly what I would expect from a Pumpkin Ale–a mediocre malt aroma with some pumpkin pie spices. Of the pumpkin ales I have sampled this seasons, this seems the most promising based purely on scent. Well, this is MEH: Part 2! NON PLUS POUR MOI, MADAME! And to end this review on a rhyme-y note:. October 30, 2014.

The year I never said no | Try again, Fail again, Fail Better

The year I never said no. Try again, Fail again, Fail Better. Why an Italian atheist should thank France for the burkini affair. August 19, 2016. August 19, 2016. Yes, it’s highly uncomfortable to swim in what basically feels like a bag of fabric that drags you to the bottom. Possibly unsafe too. Also, it defies the purpose of going to the beach… freedom, sun on your skin, getting tanned, dusting sand off with a hand. Now, I firmly believe in atheism. no one will ever convince me that there’s a...I&#8217...
