Writing Commons Six

Wednesday, May 28, 2008. I read this section and became totally overwhelmed! I think I'm the opposite of the majority in that I'm fine using semicolons and dashes and actually like to use them when their effects are appropriate. But I use way too many commas, and don't really know when to use or not to use them, most likely because I never knew the real rules. I also always wondered about hyphenating things, so now I know! Writing Commons Six: May 2007

http://writingcommonssix.blogspot.com/2007_05_01_archive.html

Tuesday, May 29, 2007. It makes sense to grade second language students on a different level than native speakers. I like the point the documentary made about grading based on content was it understandable or did the grammar hinder it so much that it was hard to read? I think it is important to point out errors otherwise how can they learn? Posted by Jewels @ 9:27 PM. Posted by David Yarger @ 9:27 PM. Wednesday, May 09, 2007. The key, locked door. It just disappeared when I tried to publish it. I’ll just try it again. Every day of my life. To try to understand the absence of substance. Until I cannot escape the incomprehensible nothingness. Writing Commons Six: Power in the Workforce

Wednesday, May 07, 2008. Power in the Workforce. I don't have a job in mind for my future at present, but I thought that Delpit's article was very insightful for anyone who's planning on being in management. On page 249, she discusses the different oral interactions between Black teachers and stereotypical "middle-class" teachers. The latter typically formed their directives in questions, whereas the former used commands. Posted by Emily @ 7:43 AM. This comment has been removed by the author. I think you...

Tuesday, April 24, 2007. One student asked, Why do we have to discuss teaching minority children the language of power? Why not just teach everyone acceptance? Posted by Britta @ 8:46 PM. How to not call it Remedial. One of the questions I came up with when I read Delpit's article was whether anyone would view this more direct, basics approach to teaching language as a remedial approach, and how that could be avoided. Or, if it should be avoided in the first place. Posted by max @ 6:02 PM. If the goal of...

Wednesday, May 26, 2010. Punctuation Full of Purpose. Explanatory materials, while parentheses are used to downplay. Those same materials. I now realize that every time I used parentheses in the past to expand on an idea, the use of dashes would have been more effective at conveying the importance of the additional information to the reader. Friday, May 28, 2010. This class has really helped me to become aware of what I can do with my writing. There is more to writing a paper than just putting your thoughts on paper. The writer, I now see, can take the time to use grammar and punctuation to emphasize or highlight certain content without the reader being able to notice. Grammar can be used blatantly with punctuation like dashes or more subtly with punctuation like commas. Posted by Kristin Placek @ 6:55 PM. Deciding Which Strategies to Use.
