Writing Commons One

Friday, May 28, 2010. This class has really helped me to become aware of what I can do with my writing. There is more to writing a paper than just putting your thoughts on paper. The writer, I now see, can take the time to use grammar and punctuation to emphasize or highlight certain content without the reader being able to notice. Grammar can be used blatantly with punctuation like dashes or more subtly with punctuation like commas. Posted by Kristin Placek @ 6:55 PM. Deciding Which Strategies to Use.

Monday, February 28, 2005. I have chatted with several physics professors regarding their opinions regarding how students’ general academic proficiency and grammatical aptitude have varied over their teaching careers. Usually, I first introduce the topic posed as the following question, Have you noticed any trends in the aptitude of your students over your teaching career? The answer to this question was unanimous, Isn’t that obvious? Hasn’t it always been important? Posted by Phi161803399 @ 7:52 PM.

Writing Commons One: May 2007

Thursday, May 31, 2007. Something that I thought was curious about the video was that all of these international students seemed to answer the questions that they were asked very directly. Since many of them claimed that the writing style of their home culture was contrary to this, I found it strange that their verbal communication style didn't reflect this. 1) the questions of the interviewers required a direct answer. Perhaps we ought to look closely also at the questions we ask. Wednesday, May 30, 2007.

That'll take you right to the presentation! It's still undergoing editing, fyi).

Writing Commons Six: April 2007

http://writingcommonssix.blogspot.com/2007_04_01_archive.html

Wednesday, April 25, 2007. As far as I know, the main role of education is to prepare and equip students with the tools they need to function in the real world. The real world mostly consists of working or trying to find work. This is why it is especially necessary to teach the language of power to those who did not grow up speaking it. Otherwise, as a teacher, I would not be adequately performing my job of teaching students about the tools they need in order to function in the working world. You can add...

Wednesday, May 28, 2008. I read this section and became totally overwhelmed! I think I'm the opposite of the majority in that I'm fine using semicolons and dashes and actually like to use them when their effects are appropriate. But I use way too many commas, and don't really know when to use or not to use them, most likely because I never knew the real rules. I also always wondered about hyphenating things, so now I know! Wednesday, May 05, 2010. Since I haven't posted here for quite a long time, it looks like I need to think about how to get started writing, for sure! A study of student writers at Oregon State showed that many of them consider getting started writing to be one of their biggest writing problems. In my keynote talk at the May 2010 Oregon Rhetoric and Composition Conference at Portland State University, I am inviting other teachers- students, too- to post ideas for getting started writing. They give me what...
