Digging Up The Present | Archaeology and what it tells us about past peoples and ourselves.

"It's a funny thing," Phillip Crummy, then (as now) Director of the Colchester Archaeological Trust, said in a lecture I attended back in the late 1970's, "how archaeologists often dig up altars but hardly ever find door stops." Since then, my interest in archaeology has often confronted me with the ways in which the presentation…

Roman Pavement with 123D Catch | Digging Up The Present

Digging Up The Present. Archaeology and what it tells us about past peoples and ourselves. Roman Pavement with 123D Catch. After the Gurob ship here’s my own attempt at 3D modelling – done during the Brown MOOC. It’s part of a tesselated pavement from a 2nd century CE Roman building in Colchester. There’s a commentated movie version too, which I’ll try to add. View it here: 123D Catch Commented Video. Anyone for a wiki-museum? This entry was posted in Museums and Display. September 29, 2013.

Digging Up The Present. Archaeology and what it tells us about past peoples and ourselves. The People Behind The Palaces. Today was a fascinating day school at Oxford’s Rewley House exploring the everyday lives of the Minoans you don”t here about – the ones that didn’t live in the palaces. Dr Christine Morris (Trinity College Dublin) shared her knowledge of the terracotta figurines found at Peak Sanctuaries, especially at Atsipahdes where she has excavated ( http:/ tinyurl.com/mg55dkr). Never mind the sm...

Digging Up The Present. Archaeology and what it tells us about past peoples and ourselves. Monthly Archives: June 2013. Thoughts on the Mary Rose Museum. The Cowdray engraving of the battle of the Solent, 1545. (Photo credit: Wikipedia). There are some stunning things here (the reconstruction of the archer alongside his skeleton, the interactive display of the painting of the sinking (the Cowdray engraving, above) and the parallel “hull” with objects in place were to me three high points), it...There&#82...

Digging Up The Present. Archaeology and what it tells us about past peoples and ourselves. Well, I’ve just stared Diana E.E. Kleiner’s Yale/Coursera course on Roman Architecture. It will be interesting to see how this compares to the ADLS course I took last year. More details soon. This entry was posted in Studying Archaeology. And tagged Distance Learning. January 19, 2014. Relative Sensations of Time in Polysphasic Sleep

Relative Sensations of Time in Polysphasic Sleep. Tuesday, July 15, 2008. In Dymaxion sleeping patterns the waking periods of time are identical in length and symmetrically located across a 24 hour period. If all variables were neutralized and each minute felt exactly the same, then all the stages would yield identical productivity from their participant. 1 Sunlight comes and goes. Philosophical Implications of Polyphasic Sleep

Philosophical Implications of Polyphasic Sleep. Tuesday, July 15, 2008. If the constituent individuals in society were all polyphasic sleepers, customs, beliefs, and values would all be incontrovertibly different. Polyphasic Sleeping brings up many fascinating philosophical concepts and ideas. Polyphasic Sleeping helps clarify some familiar philosophical ideas, and it also newly introduces other philosophical conjectures. Relative Sensations of Time in Polyphasic Sleep. Dymaxion Sleep Log: Transition

Dymaxion Sleep Log: Transition. Monday, July 14, 2008. I have been transitioning towards the Dymaxion Sleep Schedule for quite some time now. This transition has had two stages. One day (July 5) about three weeks into my China Trip (July 5), I was checking my email when I whimsically decided to start researching Polyphasic Sleeping. I read Steve Pavlina's web page on Polyphasic Sleeping, and I was so interested that I could not look away from the screen for a few more hours. I have chosen a plan that wil...

Polyphasic Sleep

Monday, July 14, 2008. Describes a category of sleeping strategies aimed at sleeping more often for a shorter cumulative period of time. Two popular polyphasic methods are the Uberman Sleeping Schedule and the Dymaxion Sleeping Schedule. The Uberman Sleeping Schedule consists of 6 naps every 24 hour period with each nap around 20 minutes long. The Dymaxion Sleeping Schedule consists of 4 naps each "day" with each nap lasting around 30 minutes. See How Dymaxion Sleep Worked For Me. Links to this post.
