Thoughts and events of the day: July 2010

http://thoughtsandeventsoftheday.blogspot.com/2010_07_01_archive.html

Tuesday, 6 July 2010. A glimpse of England. I have decided to place a few shots of various places that I have visited in England in the past few years. It will give you a flavour of the variety of scenery you can find on a visit to our country. The shot below is of the choir of perhaps the most famous cathedral in England. This part of Canterbury cathedral was built by the Normans, as can be seen in the rounded arches. This is a shot of one of the splendid stain-glass windows. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

Skip to search - Accesskey = s. By clarkefast on February 24, 2013. We were, however, quite faithful in our attendance throughout the entire time and although we visited a few other churches in Kinshasa, we believed it was important to have one home base and stick with it. By the end, I felt like I understood a lot about the church dynamic, did not feel like an outsider anymore, and sometimes even knew the latest news before others did. Participation in annual meetings, and in a commission nominated at o...

Things we held onto in Congo | Anicka & John

Skip to search - Accesskey = s. Things we held onto in Congo. By clarkefast on September 16, 2012. Over the course of our three years in Congo, many of the things that initially bothered, irritated or greatly frustrated us, became comprehensible, familiar. We even became fond of some of those things that used to drive us crazy. But in other areas we continued to hold onto our difference. Was that because in those cases, we needed them as coping strategies? Relief to leave Congo. Leave a Reply Cancel reply.

Skip to search - Accesskey = s. A six-stop trip: Kikwit, Kanzombi, Mukedi, Kajiji, Nyanga, and Vanga (June 21-July 9). By clarkefast on July 15, 2010. It started on June 21st, when we traveled to Kikwit. We stayed there together until the 28. A few days into our stay we started hearing rumours that travel would be restricted around the 30. Of June, DRC’s grandiose 50. Anniversary independence celebration. Since we had a flight booked for the 29. With an uneventful flight back to Kinshasa. I find myself f...

Skip to search - Accesskey = s. Relief to leave Congo. By clarkefast on September 16, 2012. We’ve been away from Congo for seven full months and I am still regularly feeling a sense of relief to not be there anymore. At the beginning I had not articulated that this was what I was feeling relief but it came into focus more clearly during and after the re-entry retreat and after my talk with the psychologist there. Receiving letters in the mail offering us child tax benefits we don’t have to lift a finger ...

Skip to search - Accesskey = s. By clarkefast on October 14, 2010. 1 How involved should we get in church politics? I have quite a lot of ambivalence about whether we should get more involved, or not. By not getting more involved, are we empowering some in the church at the expense of others? Would that happen regardless of how involved we got? Are we taking ourselves too seriously if we think that MCC’s involvement actually makes a difference to anyone here? These questions continue to niggle at me.

Life in Luanda

Sunday, May 23, 2010. 8220;Beat and Wind” from Japanasia. We saw this advertised just a few days before it happened – a special event organised by the Japanese Embassy. We didn’t have much information about it except the title, but as an avid fan of live Taiko (drumming) from Japan, we signed up for the bus that was going to it without hesitation. Bill hasn’t seen Taiko drumming before but was easily convinced he’d enjoy it. There were a few speeches at the end (where I understood much more of the Japane...

Life in Ludowici

Wednesday, June 17, 2009. I Think I'm in the Wrong Profession! OK Where did I go wrong? 4 years of college and then Graduate school. just to earn a living! Well, Tanner and his buddies raked in 50 plus dollars today selling lemonade again! Is that crazy or what? I got very nervous when a Ludowici Police Officer pulled up out front, but she actually bought some lemonade! I hope we're not breaking any child labor laws here! Thanks for all of the advice! He and his buddy raked in a whole $12.15! We had lunc...
