Poppies and Daisies

Sunday, December 21, 2014. We have had a very busy weekend for visitors. Last night I got an urge to practise my domestic goddess skills and looked up a simple shortbread recipe. This morning I baked. Delia Smith's shortbread with my touch - dried cranberries and chocolate chips. The biscuits were tricky little beasts to cut as the cranberries made the edges crumble. They turned out just fine though. While they were baking I picked some raspberries to make muffins. Thursday, December 18, 2014. The raspbe...

Poppies and Daisies: August 2014

http://poppiesanddaisies.blogspot.com/2014_08_01_archive.html

Sunday, August 31, 2014. I'm pretty pleased with the Corner of Doom, which has been hideous for years, and is now neatly under control. I took this photo on a frosty morning recently. Look at that glorious sun! Mr Mouse likes to keep an eye out for his little brother. Fergus was naughty this morning and managed to get over into our neighbour's place, but couldn't get back over the tall fence. There was nothing to climb on over the other side, so I had to go on a retrieval mission. Miss Dog hasn't been ge...

Poppies and Daisies: June 2014

http://poppiesanddaisies.blogspot.com/2014_06_01_archive.html

Sunday, June 29, 2014. Brr - the wind was so cold today, even though the sun was shining. We had things to do around home, and popped out to do a bit of shopping. Yay, our brother-in-law Ryan arrived this afternoon for a wee visit. We're making homemade pizzas for tea. This morning before the wind really came up I opened up the back door to let the herd out to play. My pots of bulbs are making me very happy. The hyacinths especially. Mouse surveyed his domain. Miss Dog supervised every move the cats made.

Poppies and Daisies: November 2014

http://poppiesanddaisies.blogspot.com/2014_11_01_archive.html

Sunday, November 30, 2014. I'm out in the garden with Fergus and Mouse. We are prowling around the garden together. I pad pics are not up to par, but portability and instant blogging is fun. I've got to watch Fergus as he escaped yesterday and has no sense of keeping himself safe, unlike Mouse. Unfortunately the wee devil is very keen to go over the wall. The garden makes me so happy, even weedy and rampant. There are foxgloves taller than me. And just a few glorious blue delphiniums. Yesterday we went o...

Poppies and Daisies: July 2014

http://poppiesanddaisies.blogspot.com/2014_07_01_archive.html

Sunday, July 27, 2014. We are trying to get the front garden under control. Johnny pruned a big rose bush today, and did a great job. I'm hoping he'll help me with some more (hint hint). His dad was brilliant at pruning roses, and I think it might be hereditary. I'm having fortnightly 'cello lessons this term. I'm starting this week, but I have a sore little finger on my left hand, which is important for playing. I'm hoping it will be OK, but it didn't take kindly to gardening today. I planted several ro...

Canterbury Tales: January 2008

Tales from the wandering mind of one person who wishes to share the delights of this beautiful planet we are babysitting:). Tuesday, 29 January 2008. Where have I been? We have had some terrific meals of late - amazing what one can do when one puts one mind to something! You want to buy someone an appropriate gift, then send me hunting, but DO NOT ask me to put together anything that remotely reeks of creativity - no SIr,it aint moi! Links to this post. Tales from the wandering mind of one person who wishes to share the delights of this beautiful planet we are babysitting:). Sunday, 21 October 2007. What is Labour Day? It is Labour Day tomorrow, and I am still trying to work out the relevance between Labour Day's name, and the fact that most people I know spend all weekend working in their garden! Am I missing something? Anyway, we got through the Rugby World Cup with many NZ'ers happy that England did not win this morning! Isn't the result glorious?

Canterbury Tales: September 2007

http://juniorwashbourn-canterburytales.blogspot.com/2007_09_01_archive.html

Tales from the wandering mind of one person who wishes to share the delights of this beautiful planet we are babysitting:). Tuesday, 25 September 2007. And again - greetings to you. There is SO much happening in my world at this time, that where to start is a problem. I shall, therefore, just go randomly as I think of things to share, and as it is about to pour with rain I shall tai-ho at the moment and collect the washing. I have also taken more shots of my garden - for which I take absolutely no credit...

Tales from the wandering mind of one person who wishes to share the delights of this beautiful planet we are babysitting:). Saturday, 24 January 2009. A warm summers day! Today is one of Canterbury's best! And I ventured into the front garden. To clear some growth, and finished that by 10, after 2.5hrs work - feeling VERY satisfied! Then inside to hide downstairs. Under one of the air cons - BLISS! Now the third photo shows my beautiful Gleditsia. REALLY hot days - lucky me! Well, a bit brief, but contac...

I have decided that I am going to try for the ad-sense scene - so there's not a lot to add to my last post, but I just wanted to see what people think of this. Links to this post. Tales from the wandering mind of one person who wishes to share the delights of this beautiful planet we are babysitting:). Sunday, 15 February 2009. I LOVE summer in Canterbury. Hello folks, and thanks for coming back to me. I am sitting on the deck looking out across our view and our lovely city, thinking, ain't life just grand! Then we came home and took Katie the German Shepherd for a walk by the river - and she is the one snoring in the background - you are SO lucky you can't hear her! Christchurch,...

Tales from the wandering mind of one person who wishes to share the delights of this beautiful planet we are babysitting:). Thursday, 4 December 2008. Ohmigod it's nearly Christmas. There are SO many things happening at this time of year, but would you believe - my happenings have very little to do with Christmas and the silly season! I have, as I mentioned in my last post, discovered the joy of gardening, and I am now the proud owner of a VERY substantial vegetable garden! In it I have :.

Monday, August 26, 2013. Rosemary Olive Oil Bread. This bread. So good! I made a little plate of olive oil and balsamic vinegar and seasonings to dip the bread into, and I felt like I was at Macaroni Grill. :) Give it a try! 1 cup warm water (100-110 F). 1 Tbsp. sugar. 2 tsp active dry yeast. 2 Tbsp. fresh rosemary, chopped (or 2 tsp. dried). 1/4 tsp. Italian seasoning (or pinch of each ground garlic, dried oregano, and dried basil). 1/4 tsp. freshly ground black pepper. 2 Tbsp. extra virgin olive oil.

Weekly Gratitude: grounding distractions. As my “nesting” has been disrupted from our bathroom renovation, this week I’ve finally found some distractions to help keep my nerves at ease. This has resulted in, and maybe due to, feeling overwhelming gratitude for everything that my life is and has in it. I am 35 weeks pregnant and grateful it’s gone so quickly. I am grateful for the space my garden makes for me. The past few weeks have been stressful and tough, but my garden takes me in to the present m...

Saturday, February 17, 2018. Brussels: my favorite shops. Let's start with the most important thing, namely, chocolate! We found the quaintest little shop, with boxes reminiscent of the time of Marie Antoinette. The chocolate is still made in an artisanal way. You will find them right in front of Manneken Pis. It's called " Mary. My favorite is their dark chocolate infused in Earl Grey Tea, I think it's called a Windsor. ( 28b Rue du Lombard, 1000 Brussels. Another favorite is " The Grasshoper. A shop en...
