Finish Kit: October 2006

http://gikonfinsh.blogspot.com/2006_10_01_archive.html

Tuesday, October 24, 2006. This picture shows the tyre inside the fairing. I am far from finished but the fairing is in position wrt the tyre. It shows just how much is sticking out. From memory of building my -9A it looks less once the weight of the aircraft is on the wheel. I will run the tyres at a lowish pressure also to increase the flotation. Finish Kit: Canopy frame and latch mechanism.

http://gikonfinsh.blogspot.com/2007/05/canopy-frame-and-latch-mechanism.html

Thursday, May 10, 2007. Canopy frame and latch mechanism. As always, you can get larger pictures by double clicking on them.). With a lot of encouragement to keep tweaking the front bow, and not split it, (from VANSAIRFORCE members), I have finally made the frame fit reasonably well. The latch mechanism is mostly complete, though I still have to install the UHM blocks. It becomes a lot easier once you realise there is no reason why the push rods should not be slightly bent. Finish Kit: Top Tip for pinholes!

http://gikonfinsh.blogspot.com/2007/09/top-tip-for-pinholes.html

Monday, September 24, 2007. Top Tip for pinholes! I never read this, or have been told it before, but the guy at my local paint shop gave me a great idea. I was complaining that fixing the last few pinholes appears to go on for ever. Up until now I have been trying to squish paint some days, filler others, into the holes with a credit card. Easy, take a pin and some paint, dab the pin in the paint and then in the hole.". Sorry if you already know. 27th June, 2007. Posted by Retro @ 7:00 am.

Finish Kit: I hate fiberglass!

http://gikonfinsh.blogspot.com/2007/08/i-hate-fiberglass.html

Saturday, August 18, 2007. Lots of fiberglass work underway. Both the engine cowls and setting up the gear leg intersection fairings. It also involves a lot of scrabbling around on the floor which I gave up at about age 5. I have had several batches of fiberglass which are reluctant to set. Raising the ambient temperature has made them harden off just fine but I have never previously run into this before. It looks slightly suggestive to me! Posted by Retro @ 2:00 pm. Finish Kit: Canopy taxi and safety latch

http://gikonfinsh.blogspot.com/2007/07/canopy-taxi-and-safety-latch.html

Monday, July 02, 2007. Canopy taxi and safety latch. I did not like the safety catch that VANS has added to the kit. As others have commented, it in no way protects me from a mistake, and only serves to provide a third attachment point of the canopy to the fuselage. I have made up this little catch which, while a bit ' lumpy", will serve me rather better, I think. It provides a taxi position for the canopy, as well as an additional independent point of attachment of the canopy to the fuse. Seat with the ...

Ramblings....: Weight......the final result!

http://gikoncnsdr.blogspot.com/2008/06/weightthe-final-result.html

There are a few issues that I wish I had understood sooner. This is somewhere for me to share my views. You may not agree with me. That's just fine. Tuesday, June 10, 2008. Weight.the final result! Looking back through my blog, I see that 21 months ago I 'shared' my feelings about weight. (5th Sept. '06) See below. A few days ago I finally weighed it. I was lucky to be able to borrow a set up, which is normally used for weighing saloon cars being prepped for racing on the Nürburgring. Links to this post:.

Why did I choose an RV-4?: May 2006

http://gikonwhy4.blogspot.com/2006_05_01_archive.html

Why did I choose an RV-4? Real men fly taildraggers." The cognoscenti fly a -4, but if you can't fly taildraggers.learn! Friday, May 19, 2006. Why did I choose to build an RV4? Also, the nosewheel drags on soft ground. I guess its a nosedragger! The stall speed of the -4 is about 5 mph more than the -9A, so I am confident that with a little practice elsewhere, I will be able to operate the -4 safely from this strip. All the other VANS designs are quite a bit faster on approach. Yes, the white dots at the...

Fuselage: Tru Trak pitch servo

http://gikonfuse.blogspot.com/2007/11/tru-trak-pitch-servo.html

Thursday, November 08, 2007. Tru Trak pitch servo. After three weeks away travelling, its back to the -4. I installed the pitch servo. It is identical to the role servo, and presented equally well. To install it, you replace the standard VANS bellcrank brackets with a pair provided by True Trak. This just requires some careful de-riveting and then riveting the new pair in. They are extended behind the bulkhead to support the back end of the servo. Posted by Retro @ 8:27 AM. Comments: Post a Comment.

Empennage or 'tail feathers': So what have I done wrong here?

http://gikonemp.blogspot.com/2008/03/so-what-have-i-done-wrong-here.html

Empennage or 'tail feathers'. Friday, March 21, 2008. So what have I done wrong here? I am not sure what I have done wrong. Checking against the plans all seems correct, but there is a problem. If you put the rudder full right, the left hand rudder cable rides under the rudder stop. As the rudder moves back towards the centre it rides under the stop, but when the cable changes to the SS cable end it can hang up.It can be quite a bit more extreme than shown in this picture. Electrics: The fuse block is becoming populated.

http://gikonelectrics.blogspot.com/2008/03/fuse-block-is-becoming-populated.html

Saturday, 15 March 2008. The fuse block is becoming populated. The fuse block is steadily becoming populated. I think only three feeds missing, the radio, transponder and intercom. The intercom will be located just below the switches you see for the p-mags, about where the cleco is. I like the idea of having it here. While easy to get to it is out of the way. Once set, it should not need attention, and therefore does not need to clutter the panel. So I have tried to make the runs short.

Electrics: The first building blocks of the electrical system are installed.

http://gikonelectrics.blogspot.com/2007/09/i-installed-first-two-electrical.html

Monday, 10 September 2007. The first building blocks of the electrical system are installed. I installed the first two electrical components recently. In this picture you can see a 20 way fuse block. This had to go in now since it was necessary to install the cowl cheek extension for painting. Power will come from inside the cowl cheek extension. If a fuse blows I will manage without whatever I loose. Playing with breakers and fuses in the air is pointless. I really like push on terminals. This is a ...

Electrics: February 2008

http://gikonelectrics.blogspot.com/2008_02_01_archive.html

Saturday, 23 February 2008. Suddenly there is wire everywhere! For me this is one of the exciting points of putting my RV together. I enjoy the rapid progress that can be made installing the wiring. Having ordered an AFS. 3400 I benefit from three very comprehensive harnesses which plug into the back of it. First step therefore is to thread all the wires in the general direction they have to go, and make sure they are combed out . That is what is going on in this first picture. Links to this post.

http://gikonothr.blogspot.com/2008_03_01_archive.html

This is an area for other stuff which come up from time to time. Wednesday, March 26, 2008. I was taught to make a lacing knot by a blond. Woman at Sun 'n Fun one year in a workshop. Pull a loop of lacing thread off the role, don't. Cut it, and pass it behind the bundle you want to lace. In this picture, the left hand end goes to the role, and the right hand end is a 3" loose end. (You can use a shorter loose end with two hands.). Like about this picture is that I have twisted the loop. It doesn't.

Sunday, March 25, 2007. Fuel pipe from left tank. (Flop tube side.). The path from the left hand tank, if it contains a flop tube, into the fuselage, is not an easy one. As it snakes around the F-463 the pipe is clear of it at all times despite how it looks in the pictures. Beyond the fitting on the wall of the fuselage, I will continue in the FUSELAGE. Section of the blog. The second picture is from underneath. Posted by Retro @ 8:59 AM 2 comments. Links to this post. Wednesday, March 21, 2007. Are CS4-...

Electrics

Tuesday, 23 September 2008. There has been lots of discussion recently on Vansairforce, as to how to wire P-mags. I didn't really want to depart from E-mags wiring approach, but I did want to minimise the number of switches. I also wanted to keep it as similar as possible to the switching of normal Slick or Bendix mags for ergonomic reasons. I decided to wire it exactly as E-mag proposed, but combined the functions of their two switches, into a single 2-50 type (expensive) switch. To test the self genera...

Flying, testing and lessons learned. Sunday, 21 July 2013. Climbing out of Zell past a ski slope I taught on most of last winter. Sunday, April 12, 2009. Storage / Map and Flight Guide Pocket. I have found it quite difficult to organise the paperwork aspect of flying in a -4. With significant help from my wife I have constructed this easy access pocket for maps and flight guides. I first flew with it yesterday, and its a great if small success. My battery is on the firewall so this front compartment, underneath the pocket, is for adjusting CofG and carrying heavier items when aft loaded. You can see it here also. Links to this post.

Firewall Forward

Monday, August 25, 2008. I posted this yesterday on Vansairforce. One solution is to get the speed above 150mph which of course cuts the climb rate. Another is to reduce to around 25 square and keep the same speed. The second is the more effective because I suspect the P-mags retard a little which more than compensates for the reduced fuel flow. I dont have an oil temp problem. In fact next time the top cowl is off I will reduce the air flow to. To get the oil temp up a bit leaving more air for the CHT.

G-IKON, a VANS RV-4

G-IKON, a VANS RV-4. I am building a VANS RV-4 aircraft. If your not involved in homebuilt aircraft it wont be too interesting, but if you are a part of that elite group it just might be. My intention is to include ONLY the interesting details, so the rate of change will be quite slow! Monday, November 17, 2008. FLYING, TESTING AND LESSONS LEARNED.
