Flying, testing and lessons learned

Flying, testing and lessons learned. Sunday, 21 July 2013. Climbing out of Zell past a ski slope I taught on most of last winter. If ever you wanted a reason not to run along in the cloud tops - apart from the fact that its against the rules for a VFR pilot - here it is. You see the bump in the clouds on the RHS of the picture. Well that is what is behind it! In the distance are the Austrian Alps running off towards the Swiss border. Friday, 28 June 2013. 3 new countries for IKON in 24 hours. Lots of hel...

Flying, testing and lessons learned: February 2010

http://gikonfly.blogspot.com/2010_02_01_archive.html

Flying, testing and lessons learned. Tuesday, 16 February 2010. A short trip in the Yorkshire Dales. Personal issues mean I have not done so much flying for the last 12 months, but I did get out early morning on Valentines Day. I had made up a camera mount, and wanted to see if my little HP camera could record a video. Record a video. Just give it a big enough SD card! The mount resonates at some prop speeds. I need to move it as close as I can to the canopy. Too much dandruff in the picture!

Flying, testing and lessons learned: North Coates Icicle Fly-in, 3rd January 2009.

http://gikonfly.blogspot.com/2009/01/north-coates-icicle-fly-in-3rd-january.html

Flying, testing and lessons learned. Monday, 5 January 2009. North Coates Icicle Fly-in, 3rd January 2009. I took myself to the North Coates icicle fly-in at New Year. If they are brave enough to arrange it they need support. A mainly bright but cold and frosty day brought a good turnout. The airfield traces its origins back to WWI, though its not until WWII that it became really busy bombing German shipping in the N Sea. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). G-IKON, a VANS RV-4. Flying, testing and lessons learned: June 2008

http://gikonfly.blogspot.com/2008_06_01_archive.html

Flying, testing and lessons learned. Saturday, 21 June 2008. Double click the graph for a better view). Here is some data from my third flight. The good news is the CHT temps are all staying well within bounds below 400F. With less than 2hrs on the engine that pleases me. the OT is not a problem either, in fact it could be a bit warmer ideally, but I understand this is typical for an RV4. I have finally run down why the oil pressure is so high. The explanation is here. Monday, 16 June 2008. G-IKON flew f...

G-IKON, a VANS RV-4. I am building a VANS RV-4 aircraft. If your not involved in homebuilt aircraft it wont be too interesting, but if you are a part of that elite group it just might be. My intention is to include ONLY the interesting details, so the rate of change will be quite slow! Monday, November 17, 2008. FLYING, TESTING AND LESSONS LEARNED. Electrics

Tuesday, 23 September 2008. There has been lots of discussion recently on Vansairforce, as to how to wire P-mags. I didn't really want to depart from E-mags wiring approach, but I did want to minimise the number of switches. I also wanted to keep it as similar as possible to the switching of normal Slick or Bendix mags for ergonomic reasons. I decided to wire it exactly as E-mag proposed, but combined the functions of their two switches, into a single 2-50 type (expensive) switch. To test the self genera...

Empennage or 'tail feathers'

Empennage or 'tail feathers'. Friday, March 21, 2008. So what have I done wrong here? I am not sure what I have done wrong. Checking against the plans all seems correct, but there is a problem. If you put the rudder full right, the left hand rudder cable rides under the rudder stop. As the rudder moves back towards the centre it rides under the stop, but when the cable changes to the SS cable end it can hang up.It can be quite a bit more extreme than shown in this picture. Finish Kit

Wednesday, January 14, 2009. Tailwheel and steering chains. At the time of writing, IKON has just short of 50 hours. I would like the chains to be firm, but without the spring compressed, when the tail wheel is off the ground, to ensure there is no unnecessary friction in the system. This would cause them to be very slightly slack when it is on the ground. Posted by Retro @ 2:15 am 0 comments. Links to this post. Sunday, November 09, 2008. Fuselage

Sunday, April 12, 2009. Storage / Map and Flight Guide Pocket. I have found it quite difficult to organise the paperwork aspect of flying in a -4. With significant help from my wife I have constructed this easy access pocket for maps and flight guides. I first flew with it yesterday, and its a great if small success. My battery is on the firewall so this front compartment, underneath the pocket, is for adjusting CofG and carrying heavier items when aft loaded. You can see it here also. Links to this post.

Firewall Forward

Monday, August 25, 2008. I posted this yesterday on Vansairforce. One solution is to get the speed above 150mph which of course cuts the climb rate. Another is to reduce to around 25 square and keep the same speed. The second is the more effective because I suspect the P-mags retard a little which more than compensates for the reduced fuel flow. I dont have an oil temp problem. In fact next time the top cowl is off I will reduce the air flow to. To get the oil temp up a bit leaving more air for the CHT.
