Fuselage

Sunday, April 12, 2009. Storage / Map and Flight Guide Pocket. I have found it quite difficult to organise the paperwork aspect of flying in a -4. With significant help from my wife I have constructed this easy access pocket for maps and flight guides. I first flew with it yesterday, and its a great if small success. My battery is on the firewall so this front compartment, underneath the pocket, is for adjusting CofG and carrying heavier items when aft loaded. You can see it here also. Links to this post.

Fuselage: Tru Trak roll servo.

http://www.gikonfuse.blogspot.com/2007/10/tru-trak-role-servo.html

Sunday, October 14, 2007. Tru Trak roll servo. I installed the Tru. Role servo today. The servo is a beautifully made stepper motor. It is a bit on the heavy side but much more reassuring than the Navaid. Devices servo which I believe has been carried over to Trio. The kit comes together with the necessary mounting hardware, though I did have to trim about 3/16" off the bottom of the vertical bracket. And the rest is resting against the vertical web. The motor clears the belly skin by about 1/8".

Fuselage: Throttle cable.

http://www.gikonfuse.blogspot.com/2008/02/throttle-cable.html

Tuesday, February 05, 2008. I made up this bracket today to stand the throttle cable off the bulkhead. (I made a different design yesterday but had to throw that one away! The day closed with me puzzling which of the three holes on the carburetor lever arm I should be using. The middle one appears to give me 100% of the range but it is a very close thing. I would think the stops on the carb should be the limits, not the range of the control handle. I think I will ask for advice. Postscript 6th Feb '08.

Fuselage: The fuel system inside the fuselage is complete.

http://www.gikonfuse.blogspot.com/2008/01/fuel-system-inside-fuselage-is-complete.html

Thursday, January 17, 2008. The fuel system inside the fuselage is complete. I installed the 'Red Cube' FT-60 fuel flow transducer today. It is installed between the electrical and mechanical pump, and after the Andair. Which I am using as a fuel filter. They ask for 5" of straight tube before the fuel enters and the same after. I haven't quite achieved the former. but doubt this will be a problem. If it is I will just have to bend up another bit of ally pipe. Out of any other face! Here is another view.

Fuselage: Rear Seat Installation

http://www.gikonfuse.blogspot.com/2007/04/rear-seat-installation.html

Monday, April 02, 2007. This area is subject of an SB from VANS some 10 years ago. SB 97-05-1. I think the SB caused the steel triangular brackets to be added, and they were not there before. They are standard on my plans. I think the purpose of the bracket is to stop the bulkhead collapsing backwards, and letting the seat, and buba, fall across the elevator pushrod. It is less than clear, because the SB refers to several figures which are not included. Posted by Retro @ 9:58 AM. April 02, 2007 4:05 PM.

Fuselage: Control System

http://www.gikonfuse.blogspot.com/2007/02/control-system.html

Monday, February 05, 2007. The control system in the centre fuselage is almost complete. The points to note are:. 1) Earlier on this blog - see Jan 12 th. 07 and July 8 th. 06 entry - I considered making the F-449 bracket so that it moved the stick further forward. In the end I have used the bracket as defined by the plans, but added a 1/8" shim between the bracket and the tie bar. This has moved the aileron pushrod. Tubes forward so they are almost central fore and aft, with respect to the pushrod.

Why did I choose an RV-4?: May 2006

http://gikonwhy4.blogspot.com/2006_05_01_archive.html

Why did I choose an RV-4? Real men fly taildraggers." The cognoscenti fly a -4, but if you can't fly taildraggers.learn! Friday, May 19, 2006. Why did I choose to build an RV4? Also, the nosewheel drags on soft ground. I guess its a nosedragger! The stall speed of the -4 is about 5 mph more than the -9A, so I am confident that with a little practice elsewhere, I will be able to operate the -4 safely from this strip. All the other VANS designs are quite a bit faster on approach. Yes, the white dots at the...

Empennage or 'tail feathers': So what have I done wrong here?

http://gikonemp.blogspot.com/2008/03/so-what-have-i-done-wrong-here.html

Empennage or 'tail feathers'. Friday, March 21, 2008. So what have I done wrong here? I am not sure what I have done wrong. Checking against the plans all seems correct, but there is a problem. If you put the rudder full right, the left hand rudder cable rides under the rudder stop. As the rudder moves back towards the centre it rides under the stop, but when the cable changes to the SS cable end it can hang up.It can be quite a bit more extreme than shown in this picture. Finish Kit: Painting II

http://gikonfinsh.blogspot.com/2007/10/painting-ii.html

Tuesday, October 09, 2007. At this point, as the -4 all became this matt 'stealth fighter gray', it looked good enough to stop right there. John had come armed with masks for much of the design on the tail, and the overly large British registration. The design is of a flag as you will see, that has made it through the prop, but become shredded on the way. With the speed of a -4 it is rapidly disintegrating! Here you see the rudder mask in place. Having started on a Tuesday, after a very long week of late...

Electrics: The fuse block is becoming populated.

http://gikonelectrics.blogspot.com/2008/03/fuse-block-is-becoming-populated.html

Saturday, 15 March 2008. The fuse block is becoming populated. The fuse block is steadily becoming populated. I think only three feeds missing, the radio, transponder and intercom. The intercom will be located just below the switches you see for the p-mags, about where the cleco is. I like the idea of having it here. While easy to get to it is out of the way. Once set, it should not need attention, and therefore does not need to clutter the panel. So I have tried to make the runs short.

Electrics: The first building blocks of the electrical system are installed.

http://gikonelectrics.blogspot.com/2007/09/i-installed-first-two-electrical.html

Monday, 10 September 2007. The first building blocks of the electrical system are installed. I installed the first two electrical components recently. In this picture you can see a 20 way fuse block. This had to go in now since it was necessary to install the cowl cheek extension for painting. Power will come from inside the cowl cheek extension. If a fuse blows I will manage without whatever I loose. Playing with breakers and fuses in the air is pointless. I really like push on terminals. This is a ...

Electrics: February 2008

http://gikonelectrics.blogspot.com/2008_02_01_archive.html

Saturday, 23 February 2008. Suddenly there is wire everywhere! For me this is one of the exciting points of putting my RV together. I enjoy the rapid progress that can be made installing the wiring. Having ordered an AFS. 3400 I benefit from three very comprehensive harnesses which plug into the back of it. First step therefore is to thread all the wires in the general direction they have to go, and make sure they are combed out . That is what is going on in this first picture. Links to this post.

This is an area for other stuff which come up from time to time. Wednesday, March 26, 2008. I was taught to make a lacing knot by a blond. Woman at Sun 'n Fun one year in a workshop. Pull a loop of lacing thread off the role, don't. Cut it, and pass it behind the bundle you want to lace. In this picture, the left hand end goes to the role, and the right hand end is a 3" loose end. (You can use a shorter loose end with two hands.). Like about this picture is that I have twisted the loop. It doesn't.

Wings: March 2007

Sunday, March 25, 2007. Fuel pipe from left tank. (Flop tube side.). The path from the left hand tank, if it contains a flop tube, into the fuselage, is not an easy one. As it snakes around the F-463 the pipe is clear of it at all times despite how it looks in the pictures. Beyond the fitting on the wall of the fuselage, I will continue in the FUSELAGE. Section of the blog. The second picture is from underneath. Posted by Retro @ 8:59 AM 2 comments. Links to this post. Wednesday, March 21, 2007. Are CS4-...

Finish Kit: Fitting the engine cowls...cont.....

http://gikonfinsh.blogspot.com/2007/07/fitting-engine-cowlscont.html

Wednesday, July 25, 2007. Fitting the engine cowls.cont. Fiberglass dust isn't much fun but the cowl is coming together in more senses than one. The plans don't make it clear but when you come to add the lower cowl you have very little freedom at the rear because the upper corners have to snuggle up under the cowl cheeks. Their position was determined by the upper cowl. I had to trim about 1 1/8 th. At the rear and 5/8 th. The result of this is the cowl sits slightly low, wrt. Posted by Retro @ 10:39 am.

Tuesday, 23 September 2008. There has been lots of discussion recently on Vansairforce, as to how to wire P-mags. I didn't really want to depart from E-mags wiring approach, but I did want to minimise the number of switches. I also wanted to keep it as similar as possible to the switching of normal Slick or Bendix mags for ergonomic reasons. I decided to wire it exactly as E-mag proposed, but combined the functions of their two switches, into a single 2-50 type (expensive) switch. To test the self genera...

Wednesday, January 14, 2009. Tailwheel and steering chains. At the time of writing, IKON has just short of 50 hours. I would like the chains to be firm, but without the spring compressed, when the tail wheel is off the ground, to ensure there is no unnecessary friction in the system. Firewall Forward

Monday, August 25, 2008. I posted this yesterday on Vansairforce. One solution is to get the speed above 150mph which of course cuts the climb rate. Another is to reduce to around 25 square and keep the same speed. The second is the more effective because I suspect the P-mags retard a little which more than compensates for the reduced fuel flow. I dont have an oil temp problem. In fact next time the top cowl is off I will reduce the air flow to. To get the oil temp up a bit leaving more air for the CHT.
