Finally back to running with top finishes at OD Tri Nationals and WC! Qualified for Duathlon World Championship and set a 10k PR! Just set a new marathon PR of 2:57 at Columbus! With the triathlon season complete I decided to return to the same marathon I ran the previous fall, and what a difference a year with Steve made. I was able to run a 2:57 marathon, beating my previous personal best by 10-minutes.

Economy in endurance sport is a measure of how much energy it takes to maintain a certain pace. Obviously if race day speed is your goal, the less energy it takes to hold a distinct pace the better. I regularly run a Fartlek workout that's more structured than most. I'll run easy for 10-minutes then do 4-5x pick-ups with 1-minute fast/ 1-minute moderate, then I'll run a measured mile at 90%HR for time, then 4-5x 1-minute on/off again, then another timed mile and warm down easy. Any runner who's raced on a hilly course knows that it's much more stressful for the legs than a flat course. Uphills are tough, but it's the downhills that can get you! And our muscles are not well designed for the task.
